BMW becoming 'feminine' - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

I recently purchased a new 11 e92 M3 and while I was waiting for the dealer to finish detailing the car I was chatting with the manager there. Apparently he drives a M6. He was telling me how he's not looking forward to the next generation of M cars. In his words he felt that BMW was making a mistake by 'downgrading' from a V10 engine to a V8 engine. He believed that BMW was taking a more 'feminine' route by going with the smaller engines. He talked about how Mercedes' AMG division has these big powerful engines and that even though BMW is more about driving performance, it shouldn't shy away from using big powerful engines.

What are your thoughts on this matter?

My thoughts are that he's insecure about something

Turbo V8 vs V10, doesn't bother me as long as it gets the job done. If BMW can squeeze the same performance from a smaller, lighter engine then I'm all for it. Cars these days are getting bigger and heavier with each generation, that needs to stop eventually.

There is nothing feminine about a turbo V8.

I do think that BMW's ///M Division is copping out by going with forced induction. These cars were never about 1/4 mile times. I'd say the NA engines are a casualty of the times we live in. Look at the competitors, they are all doing it. MB shoves the same supercharged 6.2L V8 in practically every car that has an AMG badge.

The purist will hate it like they hate everything that deviates from what they know.

I actually find most of the recent Mercedes (C-Class and S-Class) to be too feminine to my taste.

As for HP, BMW doesn't concede anything but the high-end. The 4.4L bi-turbo is no shame to anything equivalent at Mercedes.

BMW has gotten soft but that has little to do with the engines. Infact the engines continue to be their shining star. The saleman has small penis syndrom.

Im sorry sir, but if it is one thing i have enjoyed boasting about is how BMW's engines are always smaller than the competing cars in range and will always have more HP output. I love that, its a bragging right for me, as its a true testament on how excellent BMW at efficient power delivery. I like it this way, I wouldnt want BMW to have bigger engines really. its bad enough that mileage on any M car is already piss poor.

Mercedes-Benz are replacing their 'big powerful' 6.2 liter V8 for a twin-turbo charged V8. BMW is going the same route with future M cars (M5 for example). The manager you spoke to is a total idiot with a tiny dick.

IMO the engine downsizing is the direct result of the upcoming more stringent CAFE rules.

FYI a salesman told me yesterday that next year's M3 model would be the last with a V8. And no, they ain't goin' up in engine size, the change will be to a 6 cylinder.

when it comes to downgrading engine sizes / maintaining performance Volkswagen is king

their 1.4L TSI (Turbo+supercharged) engine won engine of the year award i believe

+1, I test drove both and prefer the BMW all the way. I would love to get my hands on the new M5. I don't see that car being too feminine. Besides, you might be talking to a manager who used to work for GM, they love making big engine cars that sucks alot of gas, see where that went? The turbo v-8 gives us drivers the best of both worlds, yet making it practical and everyday driving. That's what I love about the bimmers, they are practical.

... but are significantly less powerful than the monster V10, V12, and turbo V8 engines and are dramatically less acoustically appealing. The only thing I'm not looking forward to regarding the new M cars and their smaller engines will be the loss of the glorious sound of the S85.

he's an idiot. There are more forces at play here in making a decision on engine choice.

Everyone is going to smaller engines in the next gen. The fuel and emissions requirement makes it a logical choice unless we all go hybrid.
