Looking at the forums, the 1M is seeing temps of 280 degrees so far, in the summer track events. Looks like they could benefit from some of our knowledge, and go with diluted coolant+ water wetter. If he reached 295F, he was indeed in oil limp mode land. On the water temps, I honestly don't know how reliable they are or whether the DME is using this particular displayed value to trigger limp mode.

That's sad, way too high. And not to mention that the N54 tuners are already on the 1M bandwagon, at those temps and with slightly increased boost you're half a step away from limp mode.

I'm on a business trip, heading straight to the track after that. I'll try to do things the right way, post the excel up on google docs and update track results there/link back here, in a few days.

I didn't post this earlier but here's what I experienced at Infineon a couple weeks ago.

Ambient 85
Track time 2.08 (without traffic, probably 2.04/5)
Mods: AT, dci, ETS 5" fmic, 75/25 + 2 bottles water wetter. Ran both stock and v5 map 1 @ 13.5 max boost.
Hit 285 oil temps. Didn't record water temps. Never had reduced power or any limp mode. I'm really starting to believe issues are more related to water instead of oil temps. I think I may go 100% water +WW and work on improved air flow.

Ps, after hitting 285, I spent half a lap at a slightly slower speed before pitting. By the time I made it back to my parking spot, temps were down to 255. If you haven't done so, I highly recommend adjusting your coolant/water mix.

To answer some of the questions:

First things first - no tune. All stock motor.

And for the diminishing power, it may have felt a bit slower, but not significant like a huge drop. Honestly the car felt generally slow from the get-go. With the heat and all stock setup, I wasn't getting anywhere super quick.

I'll check for a code, but I only have a regular code reader - not a BT. Would I need a BT just to read this? I'm sure someone has one around and I can see if somebody would pull it for me if I have to have a BT.

Buttonwillow was also hot yesterday. Like Chowbow at T-hill, it started in the 80s, then rose to mid-high 90. And in the late afternoon, I saw 100 on my dash after giving rides to someone.

Anyway, we ran #13CW (most common config for BW). It was my first time in this car on this track. I've done this track multiple times in my Prelude, so it's not new to me, just a different car this time. I ran the the super advance session. Since the last time I ran at BW was back in 2008, I took it easy during my first session. I got to the grid late in the session, so I only did 7 laps (including the out lap and the cool down lap). Best was 2:14.9xx.

In the my 2nd and 3rd sessions, I pushed a little trying to get the times below 2:10 since someone mentioned that a bone stock 335i maybe capable of 2:06-2:08 lap. Both sessions, after couple laps, I felt the power was slightly down, but no limp. I did 8 laps (6 laps in 3rd session) with a best of 2:11.8xx. The oil temp got to 290F, and that was when I started to do a cool down lap even though the session hadn't been checkered yet. No CEL, no limp mode.

I have a video too, and I'll upload it tonight or tomorrow.

Here's my data (borrowing Chowbow's format):
Driver: vwong
Track: Buttonwillow #13CW
Transmission: MT
Driver level: super advance/advance
Best lap: 2:11.8xx
Spec Miata: 2:05.9xx (from April 2011 NASA results)
Ambient: 96F
Oil cooler: Stock
Oil temp max: 290F
Heater: Off
Coolant mix: Stock
Coolant max: 107C
Comments: No CEL, no limp, backed off as soon as oil temp reached 290F

Oh...something about my car, bone stock except for brakes and wheels/tires. I was running on square setup, OEM 193M rear wheels all around with Yokohama AD08 255/35. Brakes were Carbotech XP12 front, XP10 rear. Awesome brake, no sign of fading.

yeah well, if you noticed I just outsourced the job back to you guys, but I'll be adding another line on Wednesday.

New track (to me), new pads, new tune firmware, different intake and a forecast of 93F, that'll be interesting...

Here's the best lap from yesterday. The timing from the transponder recorded 2:11.8xx, and the Harry's Lap Timer Pro from iPhone recorded 2:11.77. Pretty close to me. From now on, if the organizer do not offer timing, I'll be using the iPhone then.

Done. BTW, I hope you keep a copy of the file just in case some knucklehead deletes it.

Also, I think Chowbow has his and spec miata's time mixed up. In fact, I think I would question anyone that has a better time than spec miata.

No Worries. Just trying to get accurate data. 2:22 is still good. I think I'll be attending Thunderhill Aug 13th. No idea how fast I'll go. Fingers crossed. Being that there's only 1 wall and it's on a straight, I'll feel comfortable to press harder. In contrast, I always ease up at Infineon Turn 10. Turn 3a can be an issue too. Make sure to have distilled water and MOCOOL for T-Hill.

In comparison, 2 of my friends in E85 Evos were running about 2:10-2:12, and zsapphire7 was down to 2:15s in his 335i and also his first time out at that track. All of them were on RS3s. So there's quite a bit of room for improvement from 2:22, but the important thing is that you only go as fast as you're comfortable.

I posted this over on the N55 engine mod section and didn't really find an answer. Has anyone with an n55 engine tracked their car hard and came across the same issues? Or does that engine run cooler due to it's single turbo?

Well, the Buttonwillow event this past Sunday, there was a 2011 335i (N55) 6MT running. But he wasn't pushing the car hard enough. I spoke to him a little, and he told me that his best time was 2:2x, and his oil temp was mostly around 245-250. So this may not be a good data.

Pretty fun track for thill this weekend . I think temps were about 86-90 for both sat and sunday. I dont have any data on coolant temps but my oil temps hit 270 max with ERs competition setup (0 limp modes, 14.5psi). I didnt really push it much harder once i saw temps at 270 and let it cool down to 260 before hammering it again. The fastest times i saw out there were 2:09 with the bypass.

Just tried out the harrys laptimer and this is the overlay it gave me below. As you can see my lines can be better and theres much time to be had. I think the video is a 2:11.



Anyone know how to link hd?

Had a rather successful event at the Glen this week. Only one limp mode, very violent by the way, and not related to water/oil temps, need to deal with misfires now on cyl 5/6.

Oil temps held at 260F at 92F ambient, the STETT OC is doing it's job. With distilled+Mocool, water temps at the track are also maxing out at 109C, no higher than on the street.

I'll post video soon but I've had unrelated fun this time around. I switched from PFC01 to DTC70 pads and let's just say the Hawks are running much hotter than the PFCs. They melted the pad sensor head that was tie wrapped behind the brake shield! They also cooked the CRC brake quiet compound that I usually spray on my pads (not that it helps in any way with track pads), here's a fun pic:




Google docs and imgur updated with latest results. My times sucked as I have no experience on this track.
