Thumbs up Meego Software Platform Becomes Infotainment OS for BMW and others

Quote:
It's getting to the point where it's not terribly easy to keep track of all the in-car entertainment initiatives our wondrous connected future has in store, but here's two names you'll want to remember: GENIVI and MeeGo. The former is an industry alliance that now includes automakers GM, BMW, Hyundai and Peugeot Citroen alongside the likes of ARM, NVIDIA, Nokia and Intel, and MeeGo is the Linux-based OS that they've just decided will soon be powering our cars. Don't expect this to affect your daily drive anytime soon, but in the long run we wouldn't be surprised to hear that the Moblin-Maemo base underpins future revisions of Terminal Mode and OnStar.

For those of you who don't know what Meego is:

Its a mobile operating system designed for mobile devices ranging from smartphones, netbooks, laptops, touchpads and embedded systems like in-car infotainment. It is developed by merging Nokia's Maemo project (currently running on Nokia N900 smartphone) and Intel's Moblin project. Others have joined as well including hardware manufacturers.

Basically, imagine the possibility of your smartphone auto synching with your BMW infotainment system on the fly. No cables or special adapters. You will also have the ability to stream video and music from your meego portable device onto your BMW screen. GPS functionality anyone? You want your BMW infotainment to be connected to the internet? No problem, just connect it to your Meego smartphone and use wireless data plan over 3G and upcoming 4G.

Imagine calendar and other appointments popping up on your BMW Infotainment screen...
