I enjoyed the juxtaposition of your comment and the quote in your signature.

Get the 9500ix or V1 first, and then save up the money for jammers.

My course of action was 9500ix, 3 months later I bought a 2 head laser interceptor system for front protection, and a few months from now I will buy the rear heads.

There is a 10% discount code that will get you the 2 head laser interceptor system for about $560 here:

http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...m-members.html

In my area (frederick MD), you may get hit with laser in 1 out of 25 encounters, that's how prevalent radar guns are. The police like radar because they don't have to hold and aim the gun, can use it stationary or when rolling.

Frederick City Police use Ka and K band hand held and front window mounted units
Frederick Sheriff uses Ka and K band hand held and front window mounted units
MD State Police use Pro Laser III and Ka band radar that is front and rear mounted. The State Police are the only ones I have observed doing rolling radar on a regular basis on roads like rt 15, from Frederick to the PA border.

TO add onto what scottp999 said, here in NY, highway patrol uses Ka band. I know they use laser, but not sure which one... My Escort 8500 x50 picks up on it all the time... Ya know, we should have a thread that lists what radar bands are in what states... I know we could look it up on the net somewhere, but who wants to do that, when we could come to this site and find it all... Or is their a thread that has this already?

If you are going to spend the money, it really is worth it to spend the extra cash and get a V1 or 9500. I had originally bought a "decent" $125 or so Cobra. That thing stopped picking up any signal after a few months. I could drive directly at one of the radar speed limit signs and it wouldn't make a sound. A V1 or 9500 may seem expensive, but if it saves you from one ticket it pays for itself.

OP, I agree with what most of the guys have said. I have a V1 and cannot leave the house without it, the bogey counter and arrows are indispensable although I can see how the GPS feature of other good models might come in handy when you regularly drive by strong false alarms.

If you get a V1, definitely set it in Advanced Logic mode as it reduces many false alarms as X is practically unused.

With regards to Laser detection, my next investment is a Laser Jammer. For the time being, remember that Laser guns must be kept very steady while stopped and do not provide accurate readings if there's rain/fog, so if it's raining/foggy and they write you a ticket based on Laser reading you can consider it dismissed.

The few times I've visited Radar Roy's site I didn't find its content very useful. This site, however, has a LOT of good info, an excellent resource:
http://www.guysoflidar.com/

Bottom line: do not buy a $200 radar detector. Get a V1, a Bel STi or a top of the line Escort. I personally recommend the V1. They're worth their weight in gold and will repay themselves in a few weeks/months, seriously.

Good luck,

-Walter

I have a V1 but have used the escort in the past and both perform about the same. Now on the 9500ci; it is the best money can buy but then it's also $2,000 installed. I knew someone who took their car with the 9500ci installed to Canada. He was pulled over in Canada and because jammers are illegal there (as they are in some states in the USA), the cop made him cut out the 9500 from his car and DESTROY it on the spot. (aka they smashed all the electronics). Thats $2,000 GONE!

Now I'm not a big advocate for getting a detector and/or jammer and just treating the road like your personal playground. I use my V1, in mute and I drive normally and every so often I notice it flashing and it just keeps me in check, especially for the new speed cameras going up around my home. (25MPH zones are killers!) So me personally, I would say save the $2,000 on the super duper escort and get either the V1 or Escort thats in the $500 range. Well worth the expense and yes, the V1 has saved me a few times, but honestly I'm sure the Escort would have done the same thing.

And I do agree, $200 detectors are SHIT.

On the second link - the link to the list is at the top of the first post. From what I understand Laser is not allowed in PA, and radar is only allowed to be used by the State Police. County and Local Police use ENRADD which is a pain to setup and use:

Pennsylvania (thanks ActiveKAjam, hockey005, Maestro, RFdoc, StlouisX50) top

Avis: ENRADD
Doylestown: ENRADD
Dunnstable: ENRADD
Local Agencies: Vascar, ESP, ENRADD, pacing (certified speedometer in crusier), and other non-radar-based systems as allowed in the PA vehicle code.
New Castle: ENRADD
North Huntingdon: ENRADD
North Strabrane: ENRADD
Oil City: ENRADD
Park Police: The park police I've seen had KR-10's.
Philadelphia: LTI Ultralyte reported by someone, but another reports no LIDAR use is approved in PA. Maybe locals can use it? (updated 08/08/2009)
Pine Creek: ENRADD
Pittsburgh: ENRADD
South Avis: ENRADD
South Lebanon: Enradd
State Police: Radar can only be used by State Police in Pennsylvania, and only in stationary mode. They use: Kustom Falcon (handheld K-band), Kustom KR-10/KR-SP/HAWK (two-piece K-band, antenna mounted to side window on exterior of cruiser), Decatur Genesis (handheld K-band), aircraft patrols, now Ka as well (yes they have been testing it and DO use it), Now use Ka on Blue Route near I-76. (updated 02/12/2010)
Warrington: ENRADD

All the troopers use laser here now, and a lot of the locals are getting it too. Jammers are still legal, but for how long who knows.

In my experience the real issue between V1 and 9500ix is whether you want an information overload (V1) or just a warning when it matters (9500). I've been using the 9500ix for a number of months now and have to say it's pretty nice that the GPS learns the fake (road sign, obnoxious x-band, etc) signals and doesn't constantly alert me to them.

For me, the 9500 was a no-brainer. I don't want to hear a V1 chirp at me all day. The 9500 automatically sets the brightness of the display and volume of the warnings...it's just a more hands-off approach. When i researched both of these the distance/quality of detecting ability was very similar (if not slightly better in the 9500 with respect to some bands).

If you love to interact with your radar a lot or you need to see arrows when multiple cops target you at once (lol), get the V1.

oh and either way, might wanna check this out: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=345359

I love interacting with my V1, it makes every drive like a videogame.

But I respect your preference for the 9500, I'd love to try one out for a day just to see how it performs.

Ciao,

-Walter

PS= the arrows really are useful if you learn to use them to your advantage. Yesterday night, for example, I got a sudden, strong Ka signal while cruising down the interstate. That type of intensity and length is rarely pollution ("J"), so I slowed down immediately and glanced at the arrow. To my surprise it was coming from behind... I was fairly certain I had no cops behind, so I assumed it was coming from the other side of the highway. I was correct, but I continued driving at reduced speed for a bit. In other occasions, the Ka signal continued being strong for a few miles. My V1 would tell me it was coming from behind and sure enough a cop flies past after a bit and takes an exit ahead. The front arrow of the V1 faithfully lights up as he passes.

I've had the V1 for 3 years. Its never failed me. Its awesome and I have no tickets. You have to be smart and realize though that cops like to "on / off" and if your driving alone and there are no other cars, beware not to have a cop turn the radar right when your on top of them. Or if it beeps once chances are the traffic in front of you got "on / offed"

I have a 9500ix and it works great. Here in AZ, although they have deactivated the DPS speed cams, the cities & counties have gone crazy installing speed & red light cams. If you keep your db up to date, the 9500ix will give you plenty of warning that you are approaching a fixed cam. This is really useful when traveling thru unfamiliar towns. It automatically rejects false signals the third time you drive by it.
