performance intake

Hey gang,

I've read a few post on performance intakes and still could not get a feel of which would give me the feel and sound that I would like from my 07 328XI. Could someone recommend me one please.

No sound difference with the BMW Performance Intake, just looks pretty.

Cold air intake will sound nice but you will lose some low end. There is always a trade off.

I noticed that on the dyno charts too, why is that?

Is the BMW performance intake a cold air intake too?

Mostly due to no back pressure since the airbox has been removed. To compensate for this you would need some type of forced induction.

The BMW intake is NOT a cold air intake. It is a closed system and still uses the bottom half of the OEM air box. You pay a lot for what I call a half of a system since you retain part of the OEM box.

The BMW intake also claims to reduce back pressure. The top cover actually has an air way to allow air to escape from the back end. But I agree it is just a few pieces of plastics (ok there is a carbon fiber piece in there for the look) for over $700.

Well a good exhaust will also sound good but once again you will lose some back pressure. I have no doubt that changing the intake and exhaust can make more power but if you are getting too much air through with little back pressure I would bet you will lose some low end. As I mentioned in an above post to compensate for this you would need some type of forced induction.

Not much we can do with a 330i anyhow (engine wise) so what the heck just get your exhaust and intake. I love mine

The extra air inlet for the Performance Intake is so small I laughed when I saw it. There is NO way you are going to get much air in through there. I can not personally say I have increased my power as I have not dyno'd it but I can say it looks great. Would I do it all over again.... Probably.

AFE on 328xi

I had to cut a corner out of the bottom piece of my AFE to make it fit. The X-drive models have extra bracings, etc. and there is one right in the way of the bottom piece.

I used a hack saw to cut out a 2 inch x 2 inch section and it dropped right in, no problem.

The sound on the AFE is amazing. It has a great growl to it, but not annoying. Thinking about the BMW performance exhaust next.

I called AFE directly when I got mine bc bottom piece it wouldn't fit my 328xi. They said it (bottom piece) was for non-X-Drive cars and wold have to be modded.

Pics of AFE Intake on my 2010 328xi M-Sport E92

The cut out corner is being blocked by the angle I took the picture at. There is a brace at the front end of the car where bottom housing piece should sit.

Today I checked my engine compartment while the engine was running. The hottest part was right around the air box where all the heat from the radiator was blow by the fan and channeled to that area.

I think this "cold air" concept is somewhat bogus, because while the BMW intake is a closed system, the plastics still transfer heat through, and other after market open cold air intake systems obviously suck in hot air from under, even though they may have heat shield on the side and top.

The Dinan ram air intake appears to be a true cold air intake since it is a closed system and gets cold air from the brake vent. It simulates the cold air intake used in an M3.

I have the BMW Performance Intake with Scoops and Carbon cut out and it sounds great. I think if you want the best sounding and get the most out of your intake this is the way to go and you will not have to worry about warranty issues.

I am sure those carbon filters don't do squat but restrict more air.

With respect to the additional air scoops, I begin to agree that they don't do much, because the BMW performance intake, nor any after market cold air intakes use them, in fact while the BMW performance intake increases the size of the air intake duct, it does not even change the BMW stock intake scoops. Meaning those stock air scoops are large enough, the limiting factor is the size of the stock intake duct and the paper filter.

Over all if money is not an issue, and performance, not the sound is what you are after, the BMW performance intake is the way to go.
