LAME!
1. You have to look at it to see what gear you're in... even without the LCD screen, looking at the gearknob while driving would tell you waht gear you're in. 2. You have to look at it while you're driving....Because performance drivers always take their eyes off the road while driving 3. A "performance" driver can tell by engine sound what gear he or she is in or atleast close to. 4. It's the worng color for a BMW interior light....unless you have Xenon interior lights 5. It's lame because it's lame. IMHO

It does look interesting, but I think we all have our eye's on the road when we shift gears, maybe its more for the passenger. Or maybe looks nice at night.

That's the first time I've seen something like that and I find it interesting although I would not put it in my car. Another option to have an illuminated shift knob is to install the E46 lighted shift knob. It lights in red also.

gear indicators can be helpful in racing applications. We put them on racebikes all the time (many are std now), and yes, people that dont understand the benefit will say..."you suck, you cant tell what gear you are in??" Well if you are racing down a straight at 160+ and need to click down 2-4 gears in a row, sometimes its nice to hardly take your eye off the track and know what gear you are in. Its something nice to have, with that said, the location of it on the shifter isnt as helpful and if you just drive on the track...its more of a novelty

I disagree. I think its cool looking. But I'm more of a gadget freek than many. I do agree with one poster that it is more for the passengers and a conversation piece. Too bad I got the auto, or I would look into it!

i really don't know why you're all bashing this so badly. yes, HUD in ///M cars shows you this information right in your eye-level but it still shows you the gear you're in. for that matter, why aren't you bashing that feature? isn't it just as "easy" for an experienced driver to tell what gear you're in in an ///M car with SMG by just listening to the engine? and shifting is even easier since you just have to press a paddle?
as cheesy as this shifter may be, i think it's plain ignorant to passionately claim that having gear information displayed somewhere in driver's eyesight is useless. the shifter is not *that* hard to look at when you really want to find out this information and the lettering on the knob seems to be large enough to see this even with your peripheral vision. i'm not defending this product, i just don't see why everyone started slipping down this slope of negativity if, in fact, the shifter is not that horrible.
