I know that in Brisbane they go from port to another location where they prep the car before going to the dealer. They get them looking right before going to the dealer for pre-delivery. I've seen cars there that I can only describe as "not a pretty sight" but they come good.

Worst case - It should only be a couple of weeks for you now.

The car can spend up to 2 weeks at BMW's pre-delivery yard, depending if there is any shipping damage to fix, or trim parts to change over - sometimes they will change the entire interior trim over if they had one with cream interior say, and you ordered black.

After the BMW check over etc, it will go to your dealer, who should ring you straight away to let you know it has arrived and is to go through the dealer delivery process.

This is the worst part of the wait, so near, yet so far away. It drove me insane at the time...

Last month I was told by the dealer that all 3 series sedans come from South Africa. Another dealer told me that you can get a German made one if you order some of "Individual" options such as paint and interior trims. Apparently the car moves from one factory to a second one to be finished and it adds a month to the order.

Although that thread is not definitive, some member's had E92s and E91s that were made in Germany.

I think that country of origin for Oz delivered cars is not fixed and that BMW changes it from time to time to better load balance its capacity against demand. I'm assuming your 320d is the new improved model with reduced fuel consumption (5.4L vs 6.0L/100km). It may just be that the new 320d is currently only produced in Germany (?)

From previous posts it can be a week before the 'Delivered' entry here finishes this tracking effort. From there it can be another week or so before the dealer gets their hands on it, where they indicated that they can turn it around within 36-48 hrs. So with a little luck, late this month... not before time, for sure ...

Indeed, this one's from SA.
"Liner Release" seems to be an indicator set some time before arrival at the destination port. The important one is 'Delivery', and once it's 'Discharged' it's on Aussie Roads (if not on its own wheels yet) on its way to the Dealership.

It looks like some South African built beemers are being loaded at Maputo in Mozambique (rather than Durban).

Anyone know how to track a delivery when you don't know the VIN? I know it's probably a stupid question but I've been notified my e93 is due to arrive in Australia approx October 30. Was wondering if there is a usual company used for shipping bmws to Australia from Europe, and if I can work backwards from there?

For those who have their VIN, enter it in the Cargo ID field, then press <Track>. This seems to work for sedans (built in South Africa and shipped from Durban or Maputo) and convertibles (/coupes?) (built in Germany and shipped from Zeebrugge).

Anyway, after a bit of detective work (went to carsales.com.au, searched for a similar model Demo from a dealer in your state, used the VIN and entered it into the tracking website above to find the Vessel Name). I managed to identify a few vessels, MORNING CELLO, TIRRANNA, TOBA, TOSCANA and OTELLO (this is the same vessel that shipped my car a year ago).

It looks like your car is on OTELLO (Voyage: CO026-OTL) due in MELBOURNE on 30/10/2010 (refer to the attached screen shot). Does that look right?

Awesome detective work and thank you. I spent about two hours googling shipping lines and impending arrivals and also came to the conclusion it is Otello. The dealership have avoided providing me with the VIN despite me requesting it so I thought I was looking for a needle in a haystack. I received word the car will arrive in Melbourne 30/10 so looks like you (and I) are spot on. Many thanks for looking into this. I had read the thread here and on the other pages regarding delivery but thought I would not get anywhere without a VIN.

No probs.

It looks like they keep the cargo details online for at least a year (my car was discharged from port on 07/11/09 and the shipping info is still there).

So for anyone who wants to check the shipping info for a car already in the country (or for a Demo, etc), you can still enter the VIN into the tracking website after the fact.
