Question Update 2005 sat nav maps to latest 2013/14 DVD

Not sure if the Technical forum is more suited to my query. I have a 2005 3-series with Professional navigation with a Europe Professional 2005-2 DVD. The unit has 2 slots (which I think looks cool!?!?) a normal audio CD slot and below the DVD drive for the maps.

How much will BMW quote me for the DVD - is it better to go to a third party online dealer - will the DVD be an original BMW disc?

Do I need to update the software / firmware - can I find out the version myself or is it for BMW Service to give me that?

Can I get the 3D buildings on my system?

Thanks for reading.

I recently bought a third party cd and it was rubbish. Was by recommendation from this forum as well. Rustys dvds i think.

Was told yep u get speed cameras, traffic light cams and 7 digit postcode entry, which are added to Point of Interests. Catch was you can only display one type of POI at a time on the map. Also the postcodes are uploaded to the POI, so everytime you search for a postcode you have to go through POI which is tedious. Then to display speed cams you have to search for them again as searching for anything else on the POI (like postcodes) wipes the previous criteria (in this case speed cams). I also noticed the actual sat nav was a lot slower. And my AM/FM/AUX/CD stopped working lol. I've reverted back to 2008 and its all good now.

Not sure how other third party DVDs or the BMW works though. It might be the same. Hopefully someone can suggest a disk which doesn't have the issues mentioned above.

There is no way around this as that is how the BMW Nav works.

You only get a "proper" post-code search on the later CIC systems but you can certainly get an updated 2013 DVD for a lot less than BMW will sell you one for.

I had that same DVD and whilst it was good having the speed cams on, for me it was pretty useless in as much as there is no audible warning for them. I also found that on longer journeys it would get quite hot and throw an error so I'd have to eject and put back in every 20 mins or so after that

I'm using the 2013 disk from Rusty and its fine'ish..

I have to say that its a slow satnav compared to the one in my old 2007 Honda Accord which I part ex'ed for the BM but it does the job.

I have to say I was a little surprised by the way the sat nav works in the BM.. I mean the car costs so much so you would expect the equipment inside to be the best on the market... or am I just dreaming..

This looks like what I need - there's no viruses/malware is there? Do I just burn to a standard DVD-R?

BMW quoted me a price of 180 for Europe - I don't think they do just UK i.e. just DVD1 because that's all I'll need to download. I didn't know it was that simple.Thanks.

Do you know please if the DVD drive takes DVD-R or DVD+R discs?

Are the speed cams audible?, and does the seven digit post code search work?

I stuck it in today and seems to be good.it lets you search for nearby speed cameras etc and I think you can add them into you're route so they warn you before hand. The postcode search starts off with a letter (a-z) then allows you to search through all 7 digits ones from there( hundreds of pages)

Also has definitely updated the maps as there's new roads around by me that weren't on the 2007.2 disc I had before!

I've not seen any virus' in what I've got from that site.
As I recall it, it's DVD+R you should use for the DVD drive for navigation.

^ thanks. I have a pack of blank DVD-R no DVD+R - if there a way of "scanning" the original BMW map DVD I got and determining whether it's +R or -R?

What's the best free program to burn ISO file to disc? I used WinRAR to combine the RARs and produce the ISO.

Thanks.

Since I only had DVD-R discs I burnt to one (using ImgBurn) and as an experiment tried it in the DVD drive - it partially seemed to work in that the system accepted the disc (there was no "Please insert the Navigation Disc" message), however trying to go to a previous entered destination or viewing the map did not work - so I suspect the drive is DVD+R as suggested?

Not too sure about that sort of stuff mate, but when I put that backup disc I got on eBay in the drive it told me that an update was in progress and to power down for 5 mins.
Did that while I fitted new Velcro bits for my mats then fired it back up and all was well!

I've now seen those discs for 9.99 delivered on eBay.

My Professional Sat Nav unit is the twin CD audio drive at the top and navigation DVD drive at the bottom.

P.S. I read somewhere here that audio CDs play normally in the DVD drive - that does not happen for me; it still requests for the Navigation map disc.

I tried a DVD+R and although there's no error message on inserting the disc, when you try to input a new destination no information appears (like City, Street) and when you go to view the map view you get a solid dark green area filling the screen - no map info! Sigh :-( Help please! This is a CCC system.

I tired a thirdy party disc and burned my own DVD disc as well, but the CCC unit in my car just didn't get on with either, so am just using the OEM disc.

I know other people have been fine, I wonder if BMW had different sources for the CCC DVD drives, and some drives simply cannot read non OEM discs as well as others?? I know Apple certainly have different suppliers for their LCDs/Opitical drives/Hard drives.
