335i fuel economy

So I picked up my new (to me) 335i on monday drove back upto Scotland from London and got 26mpg (indicated) on the 400 odd mile run. Quite happy with that to be honest as there was quite some traffic on the M6.

However i'v noticed town mpg drop quite dramatically. I average around 15mpg if I drive around town with heavy foot, you know hear the engine and all. Yesterday I decided to take it easy all day, managed a decent 22mpg mainly town driving a few miles dual carriage.

Does that sound about right? you CAN achieve 22mpg in town if you drive very very carefully? Otherwise 15-17mpg it is around town?

Just wanted to check with other 335i owners to see my car is not suffering from a problem thats causing bad fuel economy.

Just for the record i'm not complaining at all about mpg, im actually quite impressed coming from my last car, just wanted to make sure its normal and nothing is wrong.

Sounds about right. On my mega long drive to Italy I got about 32MPG but that was as light right footed as possible, around town is about 22mpg ish.

I have a remap I think that helps with economy (if driving lightly).

I dont think that is too good.
I have a tune and in cruise at 70mph motorway I always see over 30mpg.
If traffic is heavy and speeds down to 50-60 then I always see >34mpg.
In town maybe down to 23 or so, but never get down to 15mpg ever.

To op, what sort of gear do you use at 30mph and 40mph? Maybe try and use your highest gears at these speeds if it will let you [i'm asuming your auto].

Also like motorway at 60mph in highest gear to see what you can get.

The computers also arnt always 100% accurate as well.

It's very dependant on gearing.

If you pay attention to the shift indicator and change up early it makes a big difference to mileage.

If I short shift I can get 25+mpg in town. Driving normally I get around 18mpg.

I did a 50 mile motorway run yesterday and got 35.3 mpg at 75 mph. If I really give it some I get 19-20 and normal driving is round town is mid 20's

Thats just in D being very very easy on the throttle.

I heard somewhere its more economical to drive around town in DS mode. Any truth in that?

How the hell are people managing 25mpg in town? As soon as I accelerate at all it goes down to low 20s lol.

I guess I should add I do live bang city centre and most of my driving is in and around the city, my average speed is 20mph just to give you an idea.

I am assuming people who average more than low 20s in town must have a higher avg speed?

sounds about right.

i get about 15-20 in town.

like the op, i like to hear the engine and keep in a lower gear on a light throttle. i'm still in 2nd at 25 or 30, 3rd at most in built up areas.

feck saving gas, you don't buy 3 litre twin turbos for that.....

went to brighton today in the TTS and exactly half of the tank is gone (London-Brighton- London)....mixture of town and motorway driving...

Think it might have been the same with the 335....or even worse...

Now I feel a bit better knowing it isn't just me getting those figures. Just as long as my car isn't broken i'm happy. I actually think its quite good even being able to get into the 20s driving carefully in these cars.

I'v driven 800 miles since monday morning in this car and all I can say is wow so far, everytime I drive her it feels more special. Bloody amazing car! Best purchase so far

Makes the Fast Datsun MPG seem even better! I'm averaging over 20mpg and have had it up to 165 a few times (at Millbrook). But it does change in to 6th at 33mph and keeps going in that gear till 190

well if you have control over changing gears using the paddles or whatever then you can force it to go into higher gears providing the rpm isnt too low [which it will auto change you down for], so maybe you can put it into the higher gears round town but i dont know exactly what it is capable of.

It should be ok in 5th at 30 but as soon as you slow down you will prob have to change down straight away.

I think 20 odd round town is good and 30s on motorway

i average 23 MPG motorway and town.

I have to say, if you're concerned at all about mpg, then this car isn't the right car for you...

I was only concerned as I wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong with my car as I read on this forum someone suffering from horrible mpg due to issues with his 335i.

I am quite happy at its consuption given my previous "fun" car was giving me single figures

very true, my friend gets about 21 mpg in his m3 round town by using the higher gears and being light footed.

I am currently getting 16.4mpg around town. A mixture of traffic and giving it the beans when I get the chance doesn't help.

While I know its not accurate but I reset the OBC today and went steady from Glasgow to Edinburgh and back at around 80 most of the way and it says 43mpg...

Any error codes for a dodgy OBC?

Very few slow downs for a change as it was during working hours

(OBC average was 30mpg before I reset it)
