330i Engine Over Heating

As I was driving home yesterday from the office, I noticed the temperature warning light came on and then turned red. I pulled over to the gas station and had it towed the dealership. While waiting for the tow truck I looked under the hood and noticed water had sprayed in the engine compartment. Do you think it's a bad hose, water pump, thermostat, or crack in the radiator? The car only has 45k miles and all service records are up to date. I am waiting to hear back from the dealership now.

Depends on how much water. BMW radiators historically have been problematic being that they're constructed of plastic and metal. I had the one on my 330 replaced @ about 30k miles.

Dealership? How much are they charging you? They will probably change the thermostat too. My guess $1,800.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

It's under warranty, so I just have to pay the $50 deductible. I'll ask if they are going to change the thermostat.

^ I doubt they will. If it was out of warranty they would have, but since they have to show BMWNA it is defective (otherwise they won;t get reimbursed), they won't.

My 325i water pump went out as well about 3 weeks ago.The same thing happend to me. My engine overheated while I was driving on the freeway and my resevior tank cap ruptured as well causing coolent to spill all over the engine. lucky for my the car is still under warranty until Octoberl. If it was out of my pocket it would have cost me about $1,100 to fix at the dealer or $850 at my Indy shop. The part alone is about $500 and its a fairly easy DIY. Four bolts hold the water pump , one elctrical connection with few water hoses,but any ways in my head for the last year I figured it was only a matter of time before it went out because I have 98k miles.
