Low level oil indicator

well i did the oil change my self last weekend, at first it showed max on the oil indicator and notice today it said +1qt. So i went to Auto zone and got myself one and pour it in and now, indicator shows OK but it still shows low on the bar, any ideas on how to correct this or its fine as is?????

When you did the oil change, how many quarts of oil did you originally fill up the engine with?

7 quarts, but today it look fine all the way to max, hope fully it stays like that.

I think you over filled the engine with the extra quart. When you do an oil change the engine takes 7 quarts. Some time the sensor just needs a bit of time to settle and you just need to egnore it. If you konw you put 7 quarts in it, and there is no signs of a visible (large leak - loosing 1 quart that fast is unusual) then you need to trust the fact that there are 7 quarts in the engine.

My 09 was showing a lower than max level after 5000miles following the last oil change, so i added one qrt of bmw oil, at first the readout did not register, but after a day or two, it showed that the oil level reached max. I guess it just need time.

If you poured 8 quarts in then you've overfilled and need to remove one quart before you have problems; including failed cats.

What type of oil did you use?

You need to step away from your car and spend a month reading here before you screw up your car even more.

In the meantime, take your car to a BMW dealer or a BMW independent shop to get your oil and filter changed using proper fluids and filters.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

When you change the oil, you drain the old oil out, change the oil filter, and put in 7 quarts of fresh oil. At some point in the past the low oil pressure light was some new-fangled, not-to-be-trusted system too.

It is when months have passed and it tells you that your oil is low then you add a quart and it still tells you that your oil is low then at a later time you recheck it and it shows max. It makes me feel uneasy. With a dipstick it is a no-brainer. Oil is in the cross hatches and you are good to go.

I agree with you about the transmission and fixing the HPFP.

I FEEL BMW doesnt want to see what your looks like. U think they would want to add dipsticks because im thinking dipsticks are cheaper than the retarded e-dipstick!!

Not really, as every dipstick equipped vehicle I have owned has recommended checking the oil level when hot - not cold. The sensor software insures that.

I did my engine oil & filter change today. 6 quarts Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 in my 2006 325i and it says it is fine. Also did rear differential oil change.. easy both.

as i have stated before.......i do my own oil change....

always with 7 quarts of oil and OEM filter......and my reading is always 3/4 full

i have never seen it full or half-way......
