Water Pump - When did yours die? Is this a good deal?

So I'm dreading one day my water pump dying when i'm on a long trip. I have a long drive planned over the summer (like 21 hours total driving) and i'm wondering if I should replace my water pump and thermostat before embarking on this?? I'm running a 2006 330 xi with 52,000 on the clock.

I've seen this deal but wonder, is this truly OEM?:

Otherwise I've been quoted this by an indy specialist:

Replace Water Pump and Thermostat (LABOR ONLY): $212 (2.5hrs)
Water Pump: $485
Bolt Set: $8.50
Thermostat: $115
Coolant: $23.98

Any recommendations guys? I see a lot of threads about water pumps dying but can people state here when and if there's has died and after how many miles??

My '07 died at 50k miles a couple months ago at the worst time during a short road trip in a different country. Total pain in the ass to get it home. Those prices look decent.

Ecs tuning has a water pump and thermostat kit with coolant and hardware for less than that. Check them out I always order from them. BTW the ebay link doesn't look OEM

Pump went out at 51k on my 535i. Go figure with my luck it would die 1,000 miles after warranty. Mine showed no signs that it was dying - it just happened randomly as I was driving down the freeway on my way home from work.

I replaced mine as a precaution at 90k.

The one I found looks to be more expensive? Am I in the wrong place? Ebay is $415 for water pump, thermostat and bolt set (including tax)

This looks like it's $496 before tax? Any coupon codes knocking around??

Died at 116,000. If you don't need it fast then consider FCP Euro. They have a kit which includes everything for $490 shipped and a lifetime warranty. I didn't use them because I needed it now and they screwed up 2nd day delivery. Went to my local dealership for $583 out the door after applying a 15% discount by using the local dealer discount card.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

80K Miles, overheat light showed in cluster, pulled over right away and had to get car towed.

From reading about this issue over the years, it feel it fails at random. Apparently the part has been updated a few times, so it might be more reliable now.

Mine failed last year, it does seem random but I would wait just make sure you have AAA for your trip.

Thermostat died at 75k, at 86k now and haven't replaced it. Thinking I'm just going to go ahead and replace both the WP and TStat soon. I don't feel like being stranded.

Mine was replaced under CPO around 60,000 miles shortly before I purchased the car. I'm at 113,000 now and I've started saving for this repair.

Like folks above are saying, try ecs or tischer. I know tischer has a tstat and WP deal with free shipping.

Mine was done at 70k, replaced with oem (upgraded I think from original), work myself so free there. Parts incl thermostat wasn't cheap, but to expect - it's a bmw!

There's no way to predict equipment failure or a defect. A part can fail at any moment, however, as the part ages and wears its reliability is decreased. More part failures at 100k vs 10k. With preventive maintenance, my goal is to prevent failure and extend the life of the car.

There are many factors involved. Cost, availability of parts, availability of technician, schedule, additional damage as a result of part failure, expected downtime due to failure, etc.

I agree that certain items/situations should be run-to-failure. Given your circumstances, run to failure might be a better option than replacing it due to age/miles.


My scenario:
-2006 325i
-90,000 miles
-6 day 2,600 mile trip planned (VA - CA)
-great relationship with my indy
-low cost
-car already being serviced; brake and power steering flush

I'm now in CA, no failures, will be hitting 100k this week, and not thinking "will this be the trip that my water pump fails".
