Help! Stolen Car Key

I just bought my 335i equipped with comfort access last week. Last night, someone broke into my apartment and stole my stuff including my car spare key. Luckily, my car was at dealership for turbo problem. The bad thing is the spare key still has the dealer tag on it which specify my car's model, year, color, body style, and perhaps VIN. I called my dealership to reprogram my car but the dealership told me that since the thief has the 'key' so he still be able to open/unlock my car with the 'key' but he wouldn't be able to turn on the car.
What should I do? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

He'll probably never come back. But I understand your worries. Good luck, buy a shotgun and some shooting range practice time.

you can get driver's side keyhole cover which removes the entire locking mechanism. Unlikely that the thief comes back back who knows...while we're sleeping, they're creepin'. Should they return, after pressing the button with no luck and finding no keyhole they may just move on. This is assuming they don't know there is a key contained in the key fob and also can't find the trunk lock.

its likely they might come back as they know they have your car keys, they might think they can steal your car next.

does everybody love insurance on the forums or what? sure they'll pay. but then they'll just jack up your premium some way or another, probably "living in unsafe area" rate increase....

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You can get one of those steering wheel immobilizers for the time being.

I find it hard to believe that the dealer a cannot recode the unlock/lock codes. If this was the case you would be able to unlock any E90 with a different fob...although unlikely, it sounds like BMW uses standard codes for unlocking/locking the car. Find the right code and you'll be able to unlock that car...

They can recode the electrics to keep the fob from working but they can't sprinkle fairy dust on the physical locks to make the keys no longer work.

The dealer would have to replace the door locks and trunk lock - an expensive proposition.

Doing nothing but recoding the fob will still allow the thieves to unlock the car using the built in key, but they won't be able to steal the car.
