Beautiful piece of driving by Patrick Snijers at the 1988 Manx rally stage in a BMW M3 E30. The footage here shows Belgian rally star Patrick Snijers and co-driver Dany Colebunders scoring a legendary Rally Isle of Man victory in 1988. This drive is widely acknowledged as one of the great drives in British rallying history.

The rally E30 M3's were built from the standard model not the Sport Evolution, so the engine was the 2.3, Prodrive's first engines produced 270hp, with later developements this rose to 285 and finally 295.

A 1988 325i was my first car. I loved every minute in it.

The only 2.5 M3 was the Sport Evolution, BMW built 600 of them, these mainly raced in the DTM, the first racing M3's (standard, EVO 1 & EVO 2) were all 2.3's. Almost all other E30 M3's were 2.3's, except for some special (race only) 2.0 litre M3's which were developed for the BTCC.

Magic, pure magic! Thanks for posting that.
Actually, vague recollections of having seen the coverage before, on the BBC. I believe it was Steve Rider doing the commentary. He mentions McRae a few times, and I immediately thought of Colin, but of course it was his dad, Jimmy, back in 1988. Showing my age now McRae was in the Sierra Cosworth. That M3 still looks great today, doesn't it? A classic. The M3 and the Sierra Cosworth battled in the British Touring Car Championship, as well as in rallying. Better cut off here before I start getting all nostalgic... Again, thanks for this, Graeme |

I don't know much about camshaft combinations for these engines, there are a few others on here who could tell you what to use on a rally engine. I wouldn't expect the peak torque figure to be much different though, "rally cams" just tend to move the torque lower down and over a wider rpm range, at the expense of top end hp, which is obviously what you need on a rally car. Also rally engines don't generally use slide throttles, throttle bodies (with a "butterfly) give better modualtion or control of the airflow off full throttle. Oh, and the rally engines usually use a 4-2 header, instead of the 4-1 "sprint" header.]" T |
