Real world fuel economy for 318d/320d/325d

Hi All

Im looking to get a frugal yet entertaining car and see that BMW have very high published fuel economy numbers. My question is, given a typical journey, such as 80% motorway at legal speeds, plus 20% A roads, will there be much of a difference in fuel consumption between the 318 and 320 diesel? I see that the HP figures are a lot higher for the 320... Also, driving like miss daisy, could you get 50mpg out of the 325d?

Cheers!

I'm getting about 44mpg with the 320d at 75mph cruise control but that is in an auto. I think 50mpg in a 325d would be a challenge.

Oh, and also does anyone have any experience of the X20d engine in the five series? Looking to exceed 50mpg...

My 330d auto easily does 45mpg on a cruise (<80mph). I would have thought a gently driven 325d would do 2 or 3 mpg more. And a gently driven 320d would be 50+ espescially a manual. A colleague has an 2010 ED model, and hes getting nearly 60 MPG so a standard 320d would likely be 50-55 on a gentle cruise.

I could get that in a 335D in the same scenario, so a 325D should get in excess of 50mpg I would have thought.

320d (177) auto.

Best (very) gentle run of 70 miles - 56.5mpg
Gentle motorway run - 50+
Typical motorway run - 48
Hard motorway run - 46

Worst, all urban in winter (not caning it) - 36
Typical urban - c38

Manuals seem to get 3-4 mpg extra.

From reading various forums, 330d seems to get 3-4mpg less.

My first thought is, what do you get from your current car? (The BMW, as an average). That will give a picture of where you stand with mpg figures. That certainly will help, for any opinion, so that you don't have unrealisteic expectations.

My 325d auto has returned bang on 40mpg average over 32k miles. I do hammer it at times though.

A really steady 100 mile trip will get 45-47mpg but I've never seen 50 on a trip of any length.

My manager runs E92 320D and finds a 55mpg long term average and he seems to sit at 70mph normally.

I have a new E90 318d ED and at 70mpg I easily return 60+mpg.

If consumption whilst droning down the motorway is critical, the 318 makes more sense as its only slightly less output, but less Co2 etc also.

Some pretty good mpg's getting mentioned.

Both our 320d and 520d are sittting at 34 mpg, both autos.

Not really being hammered but a fair bit of urban driving. Thats over 15000 miles.
