canadian winters: stay with all-seasons or change to winter tires?
I was just wondering, how many of you are staying with all-season tires and how many are going to change to winter tires?

I have decided to buy winters (regular) and get them installed on my 16" stock rims right away. Come springtime I'll get some 17" replicas or whatever with some real tires on them as well. That means my stock RFTs are goin on eBay. UNUSED!

There. I just ordered them off Tiretrends. No PST!!!!!
$164 each plus $49 shipping. $751 total, and I'll have them mounted during the prep (whenever that is!).

I'll be selling my RFTs on eBay brand new.
I've read too much about problems and lack of performance with RFTs here and elsewhere. Trying to find a RFT on a weekend is still impossible. In my opinion, it's an experiment that has yet to be completed. I've driven 28 years without a blowout or even a flat. All the cars I've ever sold or traded in have had brand new spare kits in the trunk, and that's over a million kms of driving, easily. Will the law of averages catch up to me? Who knows? Fact is, I'm going with proven and advanced tire technologies, not new unproven technologies. Also I bought the 325i base model with an eye to upgrading my wheels for summer. So for summer I'll find something in 17" with a good summer tire (not performance though, I value comfort over performance).

I'll be getting my car in early April - so I'll get past this winter without them. At this point - my plan is to get through the summer on the RFT's, get REAL snows for the winter of 2006/2007, then REAL performance tires for summer 2007. A friend who works at a major high-performance tire co also suggests that RFT is a marketing scam - allowing car makers to ditch spares and thereby adding cargo space w/o adding to the car's actual dimensions.
I HIGHLY recommend snows, since no matter what you have to get you going (DSC, DTC, x-drive, active difs etc) it is ONLY the tires that STOP and TURN the car. The math is very simple to me - it takes simply nudging another car, curb, piece of Armco, to pay for one killer set of winter tires. I've spent over 300 hours of competitve driving on snow and ice, and can swear by the performance of the state-of-the-art multiceluar winter compounds. RK |

I tried to get through one winter on all-seasons and just got tired of getting stuck in almost no snow. All seasons just get too rigid in the cold to have any real grip. I switched to Blizzacks and it's like night and day; totally worth the ~$1500 CAD for the entire setup.
