Lost Key

I bought my 2007 from a non BMW dealer. It had only one key but the dealer promised to get another. I took the car to a local BMW shop to have some other work done. While it was there the vendor brought in a key that he had purchased on eBay to have it coded to my car. The BMW shop said that it could not be done. 1) it was a CA key and my car does not have CA and 2) they could make a key open the doors but not start the car. They said that this could only be done by BMW and had to be done in Germany.

Truth or Fiction?

That's true. Only way to get a replacement key is to order it from the factory. A used key can not be reprogrammed to work with another car.

+1. Although I think you can buy a new key that has not been programmed to another car and I think a dealer/autologic shop can code it.
