I was never a car salesman, so I'm no expert -- but if there problems with the computer software now -- I can't imagine that many E9x cars (or any cars built with OBD II) are going to be running in 50 years. A gullwing Mercedes or a 2002 or Porsche 356, sure. No computers.

pick up mine on MONDAY at the performance center in Spartanburg, SC! I. CAN'T. WAIT. I would have loved an M3, but I had only so much $ in my budget. It's really nice to see the consolation prize it's getting its fair share of props.

That's exactly what I was thinking this whole time reading this...but maybe we're wrong...

There was a Canadian here that took a purple 1994 M3 Sedan back to Canada with him just because he believes it will be a collectible...I convinced him of that when he was trying to sell it.....

x 1,000,000
This M3 is better than the 335is is better than the 335i is better than the 328i is really tiresome. If your talking strictly performance as a definition of "collectors car", unless you own something like a Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, there's always something better.

Its a car with it's own nitch. Its a factory production moded out 335i. BMW gives you some sporty uniqueness to this car with factory installed blacked out kidney grills, mirror caps, window trimming, and exhaust caps. Also, BMW gives you the worked exhaust which sounds great (not for any proformance benefits...). Includes the m-sport dress kit, bmw proformance wheels, and blacked out cabin. It has the N54 engine which is in the Z4 sDrive35is... which gives you a whaaping 20 more horsepower over the 335i lol. In summary, its a unique car from the factory, its not a M3, and not everyone will have one. Is it a collectible...?

But what can I say I'm a little bias!

I love hearing all the haters lol sure i couldve got the M3, but BMW gave the 335is to the North American market only; nowhere else does it exist. Clearly thats a sign it was put out as a collectors car.

There are over well over 100,000+ N54 335i vehicles made since the launch in 2007. When comparing that to the 335is production line it is quite rarer. Someone ran the numbers on the forum and got approximately 3600 coupes and 3600 convertibles made to a total number of about 7200 IS models produced. Spread that out nationwide that's about 150 cars per state. I myself have only seen 2 in my local area since I've bought the car within the past 1-2 years.

This

I think post E36/E38/E39/E46 era the BMW vehicles, including our E90 cars, are so tech laden and dealership-service needy that it maybe a collectors nightmare to own any 335is after 20 to 30 years.

I love my car but I doubt I would enjoy owning it beyond another 6-8 years.

They only thing you maybe able to do with a 30 to 50 year old E90 is put it in a glass box and admire it 'parked' from a far.

i c what u did there...

seriously.

i think we are all in this room thinking independently on "what makes a car collectible?"

For me a collectible car has to be THREE THINGS:

1.
Somewhat rare in factory production OR after a considerable amount of time the car must be both rare and desirable on the used car market to warrant an increase on selling price.

While the 335is is not a rare production car to people in the far future it will represent a moment in time when BMW did something unique and unexpected. In a few decades I think on this merit ALONE whatever remaining 335is cars that will be on the market will be collectible! Perfect example is the E46 M3 CSL!

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...d-cars/bmw/csl

with 80,000 miles on the clock a bare bones 2003 model M3 CSL (almost 15 years old) cost more (at $59k to $80k) than many current brand 2017 3 series sedans!
That alone makes anything with a steering wheel a collectible! Only time will tell if the 335is can be a soft version of the M3 CSL

2. Near perfect in engineering. Number 1 only sort of works with this. This is why the E30 and 2002ti (and to some extent older M models) vehicles are sought after to this day. You can drive it for 40 or 50 years after production and it would fall apart on you and still drive somewhat beautifully! As for the 335is...what is the life expectancy of a tuned out N54? What are some of the many maintenance hardship and impossible to DIY

3. Last and MOST important is the car design has to look good or unique relative to other cars of the generation. The 335is like all BMWs (except the GT models) passes that test. BMWs also tend to age very well.

Look at an E46 2001 330i next to a 2001 C Class and 2001 Audi A4 and you will see what I mean! Then look at how all these cars look like today:

No way the 335is becomes a collectible. Nobody will want them when they reach 150K miles and 5 owners, the last two of which were teenagers whose idea of maintenance was pumping up the boost levels with tuning software. They will be adored by enthusiast owners and trashed by the average Joe's who get them shortly thereafter-- the fate of almost every non-M 3-series.

I understand that it's speculative ... but it's a 335is ... it's not a "M" ... close to an "M" is still not an "M".

It's the performance and prestige of an M-car that makes it so sought after. Add to that the higher price point to get into an M-car that keeps the resale market so high. Granted a 335is resale prices are greater than that of a 335i ... this is now ... and in the future. Will a 335is' resale do better percentage wise than a comparable year and milage 335 ... absolutely, just as it does today ... but it will never demand the resale prices an "M" does ... not today nor tomorrow. Will it make it more "collectable" ... likely not. More sought after yes. I highly doubt anyone is going to be parking a 335is in their collection of dust gathering cars anytime soon.

For instance ... Look at Porsche ... a Boxster/Cayman is a great car that in many cases can perform close to a 911 and better depending on the year ... but it will never be as sought after as a 911. Period.

Sir,
Your point has been well noted and apparently factually reflected in current resale values:

https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used...s-Coupe-t45066

I stand corrected.

Many 335is cars will have a crappy fate ahead.

Thanks for looking into the market and presenting the facts. Takes a big man to prove another's point. +1
