Had enquired with my CA on my poor gas mileage, as you recall I was experiencing 14-16mpg on mostly city driving loop. Undoubtedly painful with current gas prices.
Well, not much can be said as the car was not producing a fault code, so they chalked it down to the use of ethanol in gasoline leading to poorer gas mileage. I have been using exxon and mobil gas for some time but perhaps a change to one of the top tier recommended gasoline might help....I'd recommend the same to others in the same boat.

Who cares? Why on earth would you buy a BMW to bitch about fuel economy? Most americans buy SUVs that are much worse (maybe not my wife's RX300 gets 19.8 and my old Ford Escape 17 (city only)0.
Buy a hybrid. Gas is cheap anyway, I probably spend just as much per week on coffee ![]()

I get about 20.4 mpg on the computer. I reset the computer each time.
I did notice if I drive fast, the MPG will go up, too bad there are traffic all the time.

For those new to this thread and just reading the newest posts - I get super-horribe fuel economy during all-city driving (95-100% = 14MPG). During highway driving I get 25 to 30 which is nice. Unfortunately I almost never spend more than 5 minutes on a freeway.

I can't say driving style is to blame (its on auto and no DS & manual-too rough in stop and go) and non-aggressive driving in traffic. Also, I do not think a/c usage is to blame, most of the time is in the cooler mornings and evening so no need to blast the a/c. Either way you cut it 14 mpg is bad, especially for a 3.0l 6-cyl compact sedan.

i still manage to get 22-25 MPG city/freeway combined. i get less than 20 when i always try to accelerate fast. maybe people are not efficiently using their gears for the MT. i dont know about the step.

In my case, the break-in procedure was adhered to and the tire pressures are as per OEM specs. I am debating whether to do an early oil change at 7,500 miles-halfway point (my oil meter says I'm down a 3/4 qt anyways at 4,500 miles on the clock). Perhaps that might help. Or maybe I should increase the tire pressures. Or definitely switch to Shell... To add my 14-16mpg city driving while babying the accelerator...

I'm a huge Shell fan. It was Optimax in Australia and of course V-Power here

325i with manual tranny.
Recent 600 mile trip (all highway) with 2 adults and 2 kids and a Thule cargo box on the roof and got 30.1 mpg (computer said 30.5) while averaging 75 mph. Yesterday I drove just under 100 miles (all highway) with the two kids in the car (no roof rack) and tried to get the best milage I could. Averaged 55 mph and got 35.3 mpg (calculated by computer). I'm quite happy with the highway milage. I'll get back to the city in 5 weeks and will check the city milage then. |

On flat highways, my 330xi will average ~33mpg with cruise control on at 85mph. FWIW, I have my tires inflated to the "high speed" setting of 35/41. That might make a difference, since higher inflation results in lower rolling resistance.

I have a 325i says i get 19 city and 28 highway but last time I did a 300 mile road trip i calculated around 30mpg going between 85-95 Mph
And if you have a Bmw who cares how much it burns as long as it still goes when you floor it

Expected better Gas Mileage
I previously owned a 525i (2005) and was getting average 19.2 mpg (70% city/30% hwy), and 29-30 mpg hwy only. With my new 2011 328i (only have 500 miles now), I only get 14/25 city/hwy. I realize its a bigger engine, but also a lighter car. The dealer said it will get better when I get around 5,000 miles. Also, said the tire inflation is the key factor in improving mileage. He also indicated that what I am getting is typical. For a test, I used the cruise control set at 75mph, and did a 20 minute drive each way on the freeway. I will try on a longer trip later this month, and see what I find. It would be interesting to do a poll of owners by State and see what each comes up with for the same model/engine.
