2011 335is or 2012 335is

Greetings forum members,

In my hunt for a 335is, I've come across 2 that I'm interested in purchasing and I'm curious as to your opinions on which is the better option to go with.

I've sourced 2 335is(one from a bmw dealer(certified) and one at a large independent).

One is a 2011 with 28K miles and the other is a 2012 with 39K miles. The 2011 is out of the manufacturer warranty period and will have roughly 2 years of CPO coverage. The 2012 is still in the manufacturers period for another 16 months or 50K miles, however there is not coverage past this point.

Specs for both vehicles are nearly identical with the 2012 having larger wheels.

If the price is nearly identical, which is the best route to take(newer model or less miles)?

From my understanding, there is essentially nothing different in the model years 2011-2013. Is this assumption correct?

I value the board's opinions and thank you for your contribution.

Personally, I would do the 2011 with less miles. I'd take the CPO and rest assure that it's at a BMW dealer. Less mileage is good and it goes until 100k miles. So, you're almost guaranteed 2 years.

Good point. The only other thing was the 2012 seemed to be in better cosmetic condition than the 2011. Granted many cosmetic issues can be fixed. I did a PPI on the 2011 and was surprised to see the re-conditioning quality that the BMW dealer did...needless to say, it left a lot to be desired and I'm working with them to fix some of these issues.

Like paint correction? I'd tell them you'd buy it if they can have it professionally detailed. Then, you can have both!

Yeah, paint correction and detailing. There were rock chips all the way down to the base coat, on nearly every panel of the vehicle. It was unreal. Wish I could send ya pictures.

That's odd that a BMW dealer would represent with that.

I agree. Part of me thinks I should wait, but the PPI inspector said that everything mechanically was very sound. The price point is where it should be. They have fixed some of the issues, however, I may have to find someone in MO on the board who can make the trek to the dealership to confirm.

Definitely worth posting in the regional section..

The build date was late-2010(I believe october) so 4 year/50,000 miles...the 4 years are up.

The CPO one is a clear winner in my eyes, if the rest is identical (options, colors)

The 2011 is the better choice, BMW's CPO warranty is good coverage. Also, the 19 inch (bigger) wheels on the 2012 might look better- but they're a pain in the butt. They easily crack and have a harsher ride, so when I ordered my 2013 335is I made sure to get the 18 inch 313 style wheels.

The 2011 and 2012 models don't have any differences im aware of, but they both lack a cigarette lighter and ash tray cover in the center console above the gear selector. If you have a radar detector, it will be a very annoying problem to work around. The 2013 model year brought back the lighter and ash tray cover for the center console.

Off topic but you do know about the power outlet under the dash in the passenger footwell, right? It points straight down and is perfect for plugging in accessories as needed.

Check into this further....

The warranty period starts at the in service date of the vehicle, not the manufacture date.

I have a 2011 335i xDrive with 26k mile, its under warranty until 2016 or 50k because it had an original sale date in 2012.

Aww, yes...I misspoke. The in-warranty period started in October of 2011 which would put it out of service for manufacturer in Oct-2015.
