Uprated Intercooler for 320d

Ive recently given my car to Forge motorsport in Gloucester so that they can develop an upgraded alloy intercooler for the 320d.

They started with the core they use for the 335i (proven gains for that model) and have redesigned it to fit my car (they could probably do this for most 1 or 3 series, but its best to ask them if you have a 330d/335d and are interested).

My car showed a 4bhp increase after the upgrade which may not sound much, but given the low temperatures was actually quite encouraging, it certainly 'feels' quicker and stronger but i'll wait for actual 'normal temp' dyno figures in the spring before stating categorically what the gains are. There should be a larger gain in the spring because an intercooler is more important to lowering the inlet temps (they are lower anyway in the winter).


Forge are a great bunch to deal with and really know their stuff when it comes to motorsport and fabrication. If you have any questions i'll do my best to answer them but im not that technical, so if its in depth please call the development team at Forge, and again for pricing and availability please call their sales office.

I actually forgot to take pics during the process (doh!) but will endeavour to sort some out the next time its up on the ramp, but rest assured the Forge intercooler is much bigger than the oem original.

Id be amazed if you could actually feel a 4bhp difference on a 170 bhp car.

Hmm.

An interesting mod. I'd probably spend the money getting an uprated tub fitted, or perhaps a combination of the two. Because the engine and IC can imho take alot more than the tub can.

granted it could be the placebo effect but I am convinced its got more pull in the mid range even if its not got a huge increase at the top end (who revs a diesel to the red line anyway?).

Im looking forward to seeing what the gains are in the spring/summer as this is when it should really reduce the inlet temps and give a larger power/torque gain over standard.

btw im not here to convince anyone, I just wanted to let people know what myself and forge have done and for those who want one they are now available

im also looking at getting a custom map done on the ecu with a rolling road session to really make the most of my mods, again probably in January when temps are low but the map would be valid all year so I might as well get a move on. I will post the results as soon as i get them (good or bad!)

Sorry Anneka I dont know as the costs for this one haven't been finalised yet but this should be sorted in the next few days. Apparently it will be listed on their website from January

However, as an indication Forge intercoolers cost from 300 to 1800 depending on vehicle, their website has more info, details for the 135/335 and mini cooper s I.C's are on there (see link)
