lies, damn lies, and E90 turbo speculation

So, I was just thinking that there is a good application of a turbo petrol motor. BMW has poured all kinds of money into X-Drive (4wd system for X3/5). I think a 335xi with x-drive and a turbo might appeal to a bunch of people. Audi, Volvo, and Saab make 4wd turbo sedans (albeit 4 or 5 cylinder turbos). I think BMW might just destroy that competition with a turbo 4wd of their own.

Price wise, though, it seems like a turbo xi would probably cost $10k-$15k more than those other cars based upon the price of the normal 330i vs. the others. Looking at it from that perspective, it's not necessary.

But...

If they could get some people to buy it, it would be a cool car.

Maybe they will reserve it for the coupe only. I imagine the base in that scenario would be around $43k-$46k but that's just a WAG. Remeber, the coupe is usually a few grand more to start.

I'd love to see a 4wd turbo from BMW serve up a heaping of whoop-ass on an Audi 4wd turbos, but just don't see it happening.. ah well. Fun to think about it tho

Of course they will reserve it for the Coupe, at least initially. Then offer it for the four-door much later on, probably @ face-lift time, depending on demand.

Its obvious that since the reintroduction of the 6 Series, BMW wants their Coupes set as far apart from the Sedans as possible. An initially exclusive souped up engine would not only ensure that, but would also allow them to keep the price differential between the two models much higher than before. Just as it is between the 5 and the 6 Series.

I don't hink there would be enough of a gap between the 330 turbo and the v8 M3... unless it was turboed too turbo 330 and turbo V8 M3 now that could be very nice.

There'd be enough of one to sell a Perfomance Coupe that outdid the four-door, and it still couldn't touch the 440 hp V8 in the future M3.
I highly doubt BMW will ever turbo charge any of their V8s. They'll leave that for AMG to mess around with.

Besides, they have enough trouble with their normally aspirated M3 engines.
