I always looked at it as if you have an opportunity to have more than $500 in fines just going to work, if you run lights and speed. Nobody can afford to do that 5 days a week, 4 weeks in a month, 52 weeks in a year. So what happens? Behavior changes.

When I'm in DC, I see people observing the limits, and stopping at red lights. Mission accomplished. I mean DC publishes the location of every camera, they aren't hiding them (except with mobile units).

In my lifetime, I've only gotten one ticket from a cam, and it was when I ran the light in 2002. Oddly, I did about 41 in a 35 in DC, and did not get a ticket. Urban legend says they only allow 4 over, unlike MD, which allows 11.
I should like to feel that speed and/or red light camera's are more accurate than the average police officer. No offense please, but a human error is easily made. If you have doubt about a camera picture you can request the official "calibration report" that must not be more than one year old (at least in The Netherlands). What's wrong with a camera that give you a fine if you really run a red light? I mean, it was red for longer than 1 complete second before your front bumper crossed the line at the intersection? And what is wrong for with a speed camera that gives you a fine when you speed more than 10mph at a busy highway during rush hour? Of course we shouldn't send a fine for someone speeding 3 miles over the limit. That, typically, was unintentional.

Camera's should not be installed everywhere. Camera's should be installed at those traffic lights where people notoriously run red lights and/or accidents have happened in the past. Similarly to those installed on high ways. Let's face it: If we'd all stick to the limit in dangerous areas we'd have a lot less accidents. And then, I'm sure the police would be a bit more "easy going" when we speed 12 miles over the limit on an interstate.

I can't stand those State Troopers that just sit in the middle of nowhere "waiting for a target". Let them focus on those who speed around busy highway intersections, people that drive without thread on their tires, people that drive cars without working lights, or those that drive with their rear fog lights on without reason...

But who am I? I guess I'm glad I'm not a State Trooper... No offense please for those on this forum who are . I've have yet to meet a nice one, so please introduce yourself!

Couple things:
1. usb charger for cig lighter under the center console armrest. this fits great, nice and short so you can plug the USB cable into it and still easily close the arm rest on it without hitting. This is the second I bought since liked the first so much. Take a while to ship from China but can't beat the price!

2. gonna be reading some codes using my Droid RAZR M

BMW got her first "official" oil change at the dealer at 18K a couple days ago. Which was the third actual oil change.

My '02 Jeep Grand Cherokee 'wintah beatah' is getting a new crank sensor, since it is currently dead in the garage. Sigh. But at least the beast died in the driveway. But to get some Jeep karma going I am also installing a pair of Hella 500 fog lights during my New Year's vacation.

My '87 Porsche 924S is getting multiple thousands of dollars in parts to bring many years of overdue maintenance up to spec over my vacation. My main project for my two well deserved weeks off work.

A VERY busy year for me, flew 110K miles for work, all domestic on US Air. I am very much in need of that vacation. One more to go, tomorrow, overnight to NYC, snow storm allowing.

There was an item in the news just the other day about a guy fighting a RLC ticket where he was clearly stopped at the red light, somewhere in Montgomery Co. IIRC.

I don't believe that at all. What I do believe is that the intersections are cherrypicked to be the ones with illegally short yellows and that across the board these companies are profiting from those engineering mistakes. Just my opinion, but there are waaaaaay too many stories out there of these discrepancies being constantly exposed for me to believe that this is not part of the selection process for intersections in which the cameras are installed.

Disclosure in the interest of forestalling the obvious comments: I've only ever gotten one photo ticket in my life, and that was kind of a BS one (made a wrong turn into a 25 MPH zone, saw the zone, braked immediately, got a ticket in the mail and it's clear that I was still braking when the photo was taken) but I'm not bitter because of that one ticket - I was anti-camera long before that ever happened because I saw first hand the behavior that occurs in areas where these cameras are common. At the first sign of yellow at a RLC controlled intersection drivers will damn near panic stop, because they don't trust that they will be able to make it through before the light turns red even if they are very close to the intersection. This has been statistically shown to cause rear-end incidents. I actually had someone do this in front of me on New York Ave. in DC once for a speed camera and I damn near rear-ended the guy because at the time I didn't know the camera was there - later I found out that this was one of the highest grossing cameras in the city (east of Bladensburg Ave - a 35 MPH zone that looks like an Interstate highway and in fact a half mile later *is* one, although it's signed as US-50.) In a rare instance of rationality on the part of the DC government, the speed limit has since been raised to 40 MPH and there is now talk of raising it to 45 - still lower than it could be, but a little closer to reality.

Oh, and my last post on the subject in this thread... let's get back to buying our cars presents

Back on topic, I've been PMing a local guy about detailing, probably going to meet up with him tomorrow to see what he can do about the swirly mess that is my paint.
