335d vs 335i Twin Pipes

During the recent cold spell, I noticed (happily) that my car was blowing equal amounts of steam out of each tailpipe - reminded me of an old Jag. (Sorry, didn't get any pics).

This lead me to wonder how the exhaust system was split, so I looked up the parts on http://www.realoem.com/bmw/

The 335d has a single exhaust manifold from all 6 cylinders feeding two turbos. The big turbo is on the bottom, the small turbo on the top. Both turbos feed into one big catalyser / diesel particulate filter which has a single output into the front pipe. This pipe splits into two, becoming two parallel pipes leading to the center muffler from which two pipes lead out to the two rear mufflers and tailpipes. The rear mufflers have a connection between them.

For comparison, the 335i has one small turbo per 3 cylinders, so it has two exhaust manifolds (for cylinders 1-3 and 4-6) each with its own catalytic converter (one in each front pipe). They both feed into a centre muffler, with two pipes out to the rear mufflers and tailpipes.

Well, I found it interesting, and thought I'd share...

Yep, I was made aware of the turbo differences on test drive.

I have a 335i but have noticed that it takes a good while to warm up, (alot longer than my 318, although i guess thats because its a bigger engine)

What sort of temp do you wait for the engine to reach before you 'stretch its legs' ?

Oh, don't get me started on that subject... there's no temperature guage in the 335d, just the stupid mpg-o-meter. I usually take it easy for the first 3 or 4 minutes.

No temp guage???

Why on earth not?!

the petrol engine takes forever to warm up, i usually take it easy till its about 90 degrees C. Which is about 15 - 20mins!!! Im nearly at work by the time its warmed up.

Although my dads E46 M3 is the same, maybe its just a 'big engine' thing...??

It's the oil temperature that's critical and this often lags behind the water temperature. When we had a M3 it said in the manual not to exceed 3500 RPM (IIRC) until the oil temp was over 50C. The water temperature gauge would only take 5 minutes to reach normal whereas the oil could take another 10 minutes to heat up. With turbo engines it's also very critical not to run them (the turbo that is) on cold oil. The problem is made a little easier by low viscosity synthetic oils. I was also surprised that the 335D had no temperature gauge.

Is it true that diesels heat up a lot quicker than petrols?

... and that was interesting to read red-max.

Diesel engines create a lot of heat by the nature of their high compression ratios, but they actually run cooler than a petrol engine due to the fact that they have higher thermal efficiency. Diesel fuel also has a higher calorific value than petrol. So in theory they should warm up more quickly than a petrol, however due to the fact that the petrol engines use allloy blocks and the diesels cast iron and they are heavier (more mass) means the advantage is lost.

Another thing folks may have noticed is that diesels feel very slugish when cold, this again is due to the fact that they need heat in the combustion chamber for optimum efficiency. When the engine is cold the mass of the block and the head takes the heat away very quickly. However with petrol engines youve probably noticed that they feel very lively when they are cold. this is due to their volumetric efficiency increasing due to the denser intake charge.

The 335D is an alloy block....

Its a real pain to not have a oil temp gauge when they could so easily put it where the useless MPG-O-Meter sits.

That should help it warm up a bit quiker then.

Our 330d still has the cast iron block and takes a while to warm up especially in winter.

Sorry guys, can you clear this up for me.
Does the E92 335d have an oil temp guage or a mpg guage.

I know the E92 335i has an oil temp guage as I saw a dealer pic of the speedo.

Cheers for clearing that up Red-max. I suppose that we are looked upon as penny pinchers more than our petrol cousins - and thus they give us the mpg-o-meter instead. :-)

Also something else:

Am I right in thinking that in Metricland the 335d/i gets a 280 kph speedo compared to the 260 kph of the 330d, yet it would seem that when they convert it to mph they stick with 160 mph total for the 335d/i instead of 175/180 mph??

a bit off topic but...

on that picture what are the two buttons on the left of the steering wheel for?

on my E90 335i i have two buttons that can be user defined.... but they dont look like these... are these different?

telephone functions... (making a call through bluetooth and handsfree option???). I have them on my E92 but they don't do anthing.

Top button is for next entertainment source & the bottom one is for air re-circulation.

These buttons are programmable if you have idrive, otherwise not (as in this case).

Whoops...sorry Gordon...I've given you the RIGHT button functions- the others will tell you that's no surprise- I've taken them on a merry goose chase, going right instead of left on many occasions!

Left top button is for voice control functions (if installed) & bottom left is for last call/ new call on phonebook entry / end call- with BT phone (if installed).
