No but I just installed an Alcantara steering wheel on the Mini. Now when I drive, I keep fondling it. It (the fondling) looks really weird. I'm now wondering if I should get one for my BMW. Sooooooo...... furry......

CiC retrofit almost done!

Hi guys, I decided to post this retrofit that I did to my car and although the major components are working, there are a few parts that are still missing.

I know that this has been documented and done by a lot of people on this forum but I just wanted to share it with you guys... Sorry to jump in like this on the thread but here it goes...

So the story start like this I got my car in november 2010, I wanted to get a CPO so I could play with it a bit and modded it without the risk of voiding the warranty completely. I was on the look since march or april but it was almost impossible to get the right combination of what I wanted.

So finally the closest thing was an e90 sparkling graphite 328xi MT beige interior and poplar wood, all that was missing was navigation and sports package. I started by getting the basics and doing the research on the coding and the way to eventually take apart the car.
First I got a TCU on ebay and I contacted Patrys and got a quote for the CCC retrofit, at that point I didn’t even knew that the CiC was out there... I know what you are all probably thinking... Some research pffff... Anywho.. Patrys gave me the quote for the CIC and helped me code the TCU inside my car, I was happy with that for a month or so but I was itching to learn to code my car, so I bought a OBD cable and set up the environment. So step by step and a few bricked modules later I learned how to code and program modules!!! So if someone wants something coded let me know, I am in Sherbrooke but I do go every now and then to montreal and Quebec.

I ordered the Double scoop dashboard, what a happy day for me that was. So to the install went like this.

photos 1 through 5

I was driving the car like this for almost 2 weeks until I got a loaned screen while I waited to get my CiC.

photo 6 through photo 8

And just when I was about to order my TCU from Patrys, a friend of mine destroyed, and I mean destroyed his 335 so me and a buddy splited the CiC he kept the screen and the controller and i got the unit...

Then I had a hard time contacting Patrys to help me with the extra parts or coded (he was having family issues, so as I always say, family is always first), but in a certain way I am happy this turn out that way since I had a really good coding crash course and I know that I have a lot to learn but I have been able to code a few cars of some members of this forum.

So these are the first days of the CIC being installed and I had a few errors on the screen and I found a few extra cool things that I played with.

Photo 9 through 12

after a week or so I finally programed it as it is supposed to be.

photo 13 and 14

Now I am waiting on Patrys to send me an activation module to activate the navigation and a quote for the Combox...

Last week I retrofitted the 6FL option USB in the armrest. but still not connected, just getting ready for the NEXT STEP COMBOX TELEMATICS!!!

Well so that is it for now, I hope that you are not bored reading all this. I will keep sharing all the good and bad stuff with you as I found them hehehe!

Nice work. Where did you order the double-hump dashboard from? I'm kinda thinking of getting one......

Also: try BMWRetrofit.com (Vinzer on this forum). He specialises in CIC retrofits and he's in Chateauguay - he can prob help you out much faster (and cheaper) than Patrys can.

I ordered that online from Tischer but it was sent to a US address and then a good friend of mine hauled up here, that saved me 200 of s&h. I did contact the guys at Bimmerretrofit, before I started the project, I was communicating with someone and then one day I never got an answer back... I was asking for advice on the wiring and stuff like that but I guess they where not able to help me back then.

Ahh, gotcha. I know of a scrapped BMW that's sitting around in a yard that I was thinking of poaching the dash from (it has the right colour combo for mine) and putting my car PC in it.... but I dunno. Not in the mood to rip it apart I guess =)

Btw, bimmerretrofit != bmwretrofit. Bimmerretrofit is run by some guy off this forum I think, but BMWRetrofit is by Vinzer and a couple of other guys, and are local, hence prob better chance. Mind, they'll obv be more cooperative if you actually want to BUY something from them, I suppose, haha (like the CIC activation module).

oh cool, I thought they just changed the name, because the site is still the same and all looked the same except the name hehe... when It was called bmwretrofit I was talking to Alex and then some guy called Vlad took over.. well that is good to know.

And I was actually going to buy the cic and the combox and the navigation activation from them, The entire kit. But since I didn't have any wiring or anything in my car I needed to know If it was possible to do it, so I needed a little bit of advice before I jumped into it. But I will try to contact Vinzer and ask a few things to see If they can help me out with other things that I have in mind.

Ooh Vlad eh.

Ok never mind then =)

Mind you, do give him a ping. He's generally a good guy, just busy with his other business I guess.

yea makes sense. maybe i should do the same. i should measure how hot your fronts get compared to mine on a track day. i think i am easier on brakes so i may not need this.

I know some rear self-adjusting brakes can be adjusted by simply braking hard a few times while going in reverse. Not sure if this trick will work on bimmers.

I went with leather. The furry stuff will get filthy, worn down and ratty looking quick enough. You'll be getting a new steering wheel replacement every 3 years.

I wouldn't have made the jump into coding and all those crazy stuffs if it wasn't for you !
Again good job on the ride. You gotta be proud!

Who is at LCMT this coming weekend besides Nick , Jerry and myself?

P.S. Got back last night from Calabogie and the Porsche World Tour.

I would say the highlight of it all was not getting to drive all the line up of Porsches but the Fast Lap in a 911 GTS driven by an ex professional racer. Just to give you an idea how fast these guys are they do 2:00 at Calabogie with stock 911 GTS.

Best ride of my life! The guy was so fast and he drifted at an insanely fast speed through every curve!
