You are not the only one saying this. Based on some empirical 335i analysis, the optimum shifting points are very close to 7000 redline from 1st to 3rd gear. I begin to think the difference has to do with the fact the 328i has higher gear ratios than 335i.

The only reason 335i's shouldn't be shifting at redline is because of torque curve. The NA 328i N52 is what people would consider conventional "peaky." Let it wring out all the revs for best results.

Redline the crap out of an N52 for best results.

But in the real world practice, we hear that people get better time in 328i's by shifting BEFORE redline. Maybe that 335i analysis was wrong. If not, the only possible reason I can think of is the 328i has higher gear ratios. I know the 335i owners don't like to hear it, driving a BMW NA I6 car, especially for the fact you can WOT it all the time, is pure pleasure Unfortunately they likely will disappear soon.

328i certainly has different gear ratio and final drive ratios, much higher than 335i. However, different optimal shifting point is all due to the difference in HP vs RPM in two engines. Where is this empirical data you saw?
