Talk me out of trading my E90 330i AT for a E36 M3 5MT

I just bought the E90 330i two years ago and while I love the car, the E36 M3 was my dream car back in high school and I'll just feel bad if I never get a chance to own one. I took a drive the other week and it was splendid, partly because it's a stick shift. I don't think i would mind having my 330i in 6MT but the M3 just felt funner to drive.

When I got the 330i, i wasn't thinking right, because i succumbed to the sales tactics of an attractive woman, and I got an automatic because my priorities were to hold the hands of my now ex while driving and eating my breakfast on the way to work -_- I don't dislike the 330i, I just like the E36 M3 more if that makes sense.

The only cons I can see towards getting the E36 M3 are:
-going from a 50k mileage car to a 150-200k mileage M3
-only able to get $15-16k for the 330i after paying $25k two years ago
-potentially more repairs more often for the E36 M3

I don't want to make another ill advised decision on my own lol, so I'd like to throw this out there and see if this is a good choice or not

I would just be happy with what you have. If you want to make your car fast or funner. Start doing things to it. Like maybe a Tune, Suspension, Rims and Tires maybe. There is always Cravens supercharger.

But you are going to spend alot of money in repairs going to the M3 and going to lose 10K just by getting rid of your 330i.

It's up to you, but I love my 328i. Everyday I drive that car and love it.

There is my 2 cents.

I thought about getting an E36 M3, before I got the 128i. I wasn't so worried about the mileage of the cars, because the drivetrains are supposed to be pretty durable. What concerned me was that the newest E36s are still over 10 years old. At that age plastics and electronics are likely to start breaking down even on a lower mileage car.

PERSONALLY... im a huge fan of any e36 m3.

I think they are timeless, they look so good, sound great with a little love and are a blast to drive.

I will be getting one also, but I'm not giving up my e90.

Get it as a project car, because they are older and things do happen.

the e90 will run for a long time with an N52 with very minimal work.

Also, finding a clean e36 M3 is very difficult right now. Many will already have engine issues or a slew of electrical problems. E36s have lots of problems many of which aren't expensive to fix, but add them all up and you get a huge bill. That being said, the E36 is an awsome chassis. Even a 325is is a blast. It's one of the easiest cars to drive hard. Try to get one with about 70k miles. It's gonna be tough but you can find one. Also, keep about $3k in reserve always in case anything breaks.

it's not so much making the car run faster. i have/had plans for it, Mtech kit, new suspension, etc but the E36 just looks timeless like Craven mentioned. I recently fixed the lock actuator in my E90 on my own and I just feel like i have a connection with the car now, but the thought of having an E36 is clawing at my insides. Like i'm torn between a current girlfriend who's good for me and the ex who's my first love :/

i wish i can afford to have the E90 and an M3 as a weekend car, but i don't drive so sporty enough to warrant having two cars.

Thats funny how you mentioned the plastics and electronics degrading, someone posted a video about how the E36 were made to be recyclable within 30 years lol.

I don't really see why you are holding off. And sell your e90 private party. You will get more for it.

Unless the M3 is in MINT MINT condition with barely any miles I would, but otherwise I would just save up and trade up.
At the end of the day the M3 is worth nothing, book value.

E36 M is a project car unless you are in high school.

I considered a project car but I wanted a bike more so I got one. I don't regret that decision AT ALL. I love my E92 and I definitely love my new Beemer so I'm a pretty happy camper. I'm taking it out to a show in Vegas in June actually. 770 miles of awesomeness.

If it was my decision, E36 as a project or do what I did and get a bike.

+1. No way in hell I would trade a 2006 for a E36. I would just buy a E36 and turn it into a project car.

Garage List
unless the e36 becomes a project car (heavily modified) and that's your goal, i wouldn't bother otherwise. your e90 330i isn't that much slower than the e36, and end of day you'll miss the modern electronics and comfort that comes with your e90. this of course is assuming both cars will be your daily.

Sounds like you want a Manual BMW

This seams like an easy one too me.

1. Replace your automatic E90 with a 6 speed manual E90 330i
2. Replace your automatic E90 with a manual E46 M3
3. You should be able to buy 2 (two) E36 M3s for what you sell your car for.
4. Buy a E36 M3 and a beater pickup, or honda for the days you need to have it repaired...

No.

I'd trade it for an e46 M3 thou....think about it. If you're gonna trade, trade up. E36 M3 and e90 330i have the same power, run the same times.

I know how you feel thou, way back when I almost bought a 99' M3, black/stick. Compromised and bought a 00' Maxima instead. Most because of outside influences similar to you, overall, one of the worst mistakes of my life.

So there you have it, trade up or you wont be happy.

e36 m3 is a great car, but you don't need to sell your 330 to get one
save up for a little bit and one will certainly be in reach. I have seen high mileage examples go for around 4k at auction, and a pristine one wont be much more than 10k.
I just wouldn't want you to rely on an older car everyday because you never know what could happen. The s52's are nearly bulletproof, but there is a lot more that could become an issue on the car
