Weight Loss & a Muffler Delete

I know it's around here somewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

Anyone know the exact weight of the OE muffler? I'm doing a simple tally at the moment.

I'm getting stupid with my weight reduction, (not really concerned about comfort of the interior anymore) And i'm looking to shed around another 120ish lbs.

Thanks guys.

Do the muffler delete, you'd be saving around (estimating 50 lbs) and get a hellofa better noise.

What else have you done for weight reduction

Rear seats came out (really easy to put back in, but I rarely carry even 1 passenger) = roughly 50lbs between seat back, seat bottom, and all 3 headrests.

Trunk carpet/plastics gutted = around 7-10lbs

Not yet completed, lightweight Braille Battery, Muffler Delete, door cards, carpet throughout, headliner and of course CF hood and trunk, but that's further down the line. Someday i'm hacking that damn sunroof out too.

No problem

The sunroof will save a lot of weight and lower your Center of gravity. It is very hard to remove though.

The headliner is easy, but it gets really hot inside the car without one in...

Those prices look way to nice for a CF roof...I bet those are regular e90 panels, probably with the cutout for the sunroof..

Maybe I can just spot weld a piece of aluminum on there..

Oops your right, that is the e90 version with the solid roof

Here is the e92 CF version:

Part #54108045327

expansive, but an e90 with an e92 roof is pretty cool.

Would it fit right on there? I'm not sure about the e90/92 roof size difference.

I don't really have an accurate way to measure. I can try to rig something up I suppose. With the weight i've cut right now, i may have cut .5 off my 0-60 time.

I will tell you that the car behaves so much differently. It doesn't have the 'piggy' feeling anymore, and it also doesn't seem to fight me when i'm accelarating. Less body roll, better accelaration, more nimble. Everything performance wise has increased. I will tell you it is far noisier in the cabin, you can hear virtually everything going on in the rear of the car, differential, tire slippage, everything. I like it though, it's quite visceral.

My goal for final weight figures while retaining daily driveability is around 3100, i'm going to be optimistic and try to get it down to an even 3000.

I wonder how heavy the stock rear seats in the E92 are. Might have to pull those out this summer.

I just have the muffler deleted and I can tell you first hand after damn near dropping it on my toe, it's heavy. I wasn't ready for it when my exhaust guy finished detaching it from the hangers. Ridiculous.

I think they weigh in at 30-40lbs, not as much as e90, for obvious reasons. i'm excited to get that extra weight out.

1 word to describe the car now is: Visceral.

totally and completely.

It makes me very happy, so why not?

The first thing I did after gutting was condition all my seats and put them in storage. They are ready to go at a moments notice, and with just a T-50 and a flathead I can have my interior back in about 20 mins. So I don't see any problem with it.

I rarely have a passenger, let alone 2 or 3, so it doesn't make a difference in that aspect.

I actually much prefer the noisier cabin as well, I may get tired of it eventually, but eh, right now it's tons of fun.

What else have you done for weight savings? Have you done CF trunk and hood or are those a thought? I don't know how much you are looking to save but there are little things that some people do that I have seen.

Mini batteries, taking out windshield washer fluid bottles, and other things like that but that is on an evo. To me a BMW wouldn't feel BMW if I took out a lot of that stuff.

Sounds like a cool project though.

Thanks man! The Cosmetic stuff is last on the list, that'll be CF hood and CF trunk.

Planning on a Braille, and a Muffler Delete within the next coming weeks, around april i'll be slapping on some 18lb wheels as well. I'll keep this thread updated as I move forward.

Oh as sort of a teaser, I am determined to be the first to hack my sunroof out of this car. I hate it and it weighs too much.

Looking to import a Euro headliner with the Sunroof delete, and i'll probably just tac around the opening on the top, bondo it, sand it, and slap a sheet of vinyl on it.

Some other things that I have been reading on the EVO forums are small but do add weight. Trunk carpet, floor mats, then of course your intake, exhaust, HFC (if permissible), coilovers, even lighter radiators and taking out radiator fans. I haven't spent much time with my head under the hood of my Bimmer so not sure if there are two but a lot of EVO owners remove the second radiator fan. Buschur and AMS sell Mini battery kits. You would need to fob your own tray but its a start!

There are other drastic things but that would get crazy like speakers, AC, door insulation, and front and rear bumper supports. A little too drastic for the street though I think.

Good luck with everything man!
