i haven't seen a specific thread on how to install HID fogs on E92's. i helped a friend of mine install an MTEC, 6000K kit on his 2007 335 coupe this past friday. the installation wasn't that hard since this is our second attempt. first attempt didn't go so well because we had a retarded kit that flashed like strobe lights when the engine was on, and then died completely. see here.

we decided to remove the bumper to facilitate the install. there is plenty of space in front of the wheel liner on the driver's side, but as you know, there's an oil cooler taking up much of the real estate on the passenger side. you can get away with just taking off the wheel liner on the driver's side, but with the wheel liner off on the passenger side, i didn't see a suitable location to mount the ballast. so we decided to remove the bumper, which isn't all that hard - just a bunch of 8mm screws and 4 torx (see DIY here). that DIY isn't very informative since there are no pictures, and it's for E90's. from the looks of it, the process should be the same. i didn't realize there wasn't a DIY for the E92's, or else i would have taken more detailed pics when we were removing the bumper. oh well, maybe next time...

i decided to mount the right ballast on top of the duct for the oil cooler. even though they are supposedly sealed, i wanted to make sure it had as little exposure to water as possible. it's simply held on by 1 self-tapping screw, screwed into the plastic duct itself. as you can see from the pic, the other end wedges perfectly btw the bottom of the headlight and the front bumper support. my "jigging" test proved it to be very secure.

for the driver's side, i got a little more creative. the MTEC kit comes with 4 brackets and a bunch of 8mm bolts and nuts. i mounted one vertically, using the horn mounting nut to secure it. i attached another bracket perpendicularly to this one and secured it to the brake cooling duct with another self-tapping screw. the front of this lower bracket had to bent for it to line up with the vertical one because of the angle of the brake duct. i then bolted the two brackets together and mounted the ballast on the vertical bracket using the supplied nuts and bolts. the "jiggling" test also concluded that this bracket was also very secure.

the MTEC kit is nice, but it has one flaw. they don't provide a connector for you to attach the ballast to the fog light connector. instead, all they give you is 2 pins. sure it plugs into the fog light connector, but there is nothing to secure them to the connector and they are completely exposed to the environment. i could have cut off the fog light connector and soldered and heat shrinked the wires together, but i didn't want to do anything that permanent. so i just plugged the pins into the connector and then applied a liberal amount of RTV silicon sealant around it, to prevent any water/dust from getting in. you can use regular silicon sealant also. i just happened to have some RTV lying around. i then used (a lot of ) electrical tape to secure the pins to the connector. this should hold it.

all in all, it was a pretty easy DIY. the fogs look much better in person, as it was overcast and raining when these pics were taken.
