Well no decision yet mate as I only posted up the M6 in red today. I will be speaking to them and who knows

This is how I see it....

Both are shit on petrol, the M3 might win that one, but if I cared - I wouldn't be looking at either.

Both are shit on insurance, Direct Line won't cover me on either, which is usually where I start, so I can't see me caring about that when I do find an insurer either.

I expect the M3 is much, much nimbler and in many ways more engaging and 'alive' so in my mind, it's gonna win that and no amount of ten minute test drives will convince me otherwise.

The M6 is undoubtedly quicker - although perhaps only in a straight line or with a proper driver (I know my limits) so in reality, I doubt there is much in it.

You know what it will probably come down to? It's what can I really live with. I love the M3, but I'm annoyed to see how LITTLE M5/M6 tech ever filters down... EDC and... umm... Yeah.

The M6 has a (potentially) older iDrive depending which I buy, but the 2008 one is hardly better and I won't be getting into a 2009+ M3 (when iDrive seemed to radically change in the E90 LCI - not sure about the M3 changes) so it hardly makes any difference. The M6 though does have the awesome M button, it has EDC, it has a plusher interior and it's somewhere I haven't yet sat for 40,000 + miles.

It's also rarer, scarier and more awesome. It's beginning to look a no brainer I must say.

m6 over a m3 every time, the 5.0ltr V10 has got to be one of the best engines ever made and remember they are killing it off in the next model.

On small details and not necessarily a deal breaker, I found the 6 series interior very dated, it's been around since 2004 and looks it inside.

There are fiddly little knobs and buttons for the heating, not dual zone climate and no digital read out and no surround lighting, purely from a sitting in them point of view, they disappointed me.

They ride very well though and have a refined feel, if a tad cumbersome

Matt-I agree with your rational above and think whicever you go for you wont make a mistake The M6 are definitely rarer and look stunning in silverstone-our friend Matt J has one and it is truly stunning I just always wanted an M3 so thats what I went for but definitely considered a 6-think it wouldn't have fit in the garage though so that put me off lol!

Weird - mine just has the same as my 320d had - a dial that you turn for temp. What's surround lighting?

Yes they have a dial, which has numbers printed around it and no digital display.

E92 coupes have led lights around the cabin, which are linked to the interior lights.

...most seem to prefer the M6, but an M3 with a frozen grey wrap* and CSL rims would be my preference - totally influenced by the Top Gear test on telly.

I'm sorry? The e92 has a better interior than the 6 series....WTF??

Well, I personally think analogue-looking temp dials (they only look analogue...it's all digital in reality) looks more classy and their operation is a lot more expensive feeling than the controls in the 3er.

The 6er also has a lovely swooping dash that flows into the doors in a nice cohesive design and has a nicely driver-angled centre console. The 3er in comparison is upright and straight with no integration of dash into door.

In my experience, the 6er might be older but it;s the much nicer place to sit (and 6er's don't rattle like 3er's).

M6 is definitely faster than an m5. Like andrew ive done a track day with a bloke with an M5 and he was seriously pissed off when my M6 left him quite quickly.

Matt The M6 is a very agile car. It is by no means a boat in the handling department. Maybe the M3 is better but i dont think "i'd" notice the difference.

It is so outrageously fast that in a straight line will leave an m3 for dead. and that is a FACT not just fanboy stuff. heres the link


I loved mine, i averaged 11.7mpg over 10,000 miles, in the end the gearbox did my tits in. But it felt inside like proper supercar stuff. best built car ive had by a country mile.

Buy one. oh and if you do ive got a K and n Typhoon intake for one that added about 25bhp
