MD tint question - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

So I am just moving back to Maryland and found out during the safety inspection that any tint is a fail, however you can get the MSP to approve the tint and take the letter to the inspection station so they can pass the car. I think no problem i'm 35% so it's legal...well the meter read 30% and it failed. Anyone else have this issue? My plan is to take it to a different MVA and try again and see if this particular meter is out of calibration. This sucks cause otherwise I have to take it off to pass inspection and then decide if I want it back on for another $200 or so. Ugh.

Try another inspection station. Some are a bit more lenient than others. Although your tint is 35%, that doesn't take into account the light tint that comes on most cars from the factory. Most people don't have any problems in MD or VA.

Tint inspection Must be done by MSP, not inspection stations. Most barracks, ASED section, have certain times they are at different MVA's. The tint meters they use have a + or - of 2%, and they also read in tenths of a percent too. So if your reading is 30% you will never get to 35% as need to pass in MD. If you have it removed and pass inspection, then have it re-tinted be careful. If it is tinted to dark a second time you can be charged with Sec 23, Subsec 109J. That is a $500 fine , and or 60 days in jail for altering equipment after an inspection certification. You might want to get it re-tinted, then MSP inspected with the new correct tint on. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Had this problem hand contribute to MD fiscal year for the test, the removal, inspection, and retinting. I would have gone somewhere else but it would take too much time and effort.

Thanks for the input.
Don't have the time to get it re-done at 50% before a retest right now. Will just give it another go and see what happens. But if what you say is true then it doesn't look too good. But basically what you are saying any tint done after a car is purchased from a dealer (new or used) would be a violation of that code.

The violation goes with the owner, not the vehicle. New owner and it starts all over again. If a dealer or new registered owner get it passed thru MD State Inspection, then the SERO process stars all over again. You get one bite of the bad apple, 2 bites and you might get the S23- SS109j.
