HOME GARAGE: N54 Engine Replacement

Hello Guys. I don’t Post much here, but this is worth the effort.

Just wanted to quickly share my story here with you guys. A lot of you guys know me around here as the walnut blast Guy – I been helping a lot of you guys out with all your E9X needs( walnut blasting and Bolt-On s, suspension, Brake jobs, turbos, alternators, vcg, ofhg… ect….ect ) So I’ve had a hell of a year with my car, one thing after the other but I am not complaining – I push my car pretty hard and I put myself in a situation where an replacement engine was needed for my 2008 e90 with 5X,XXXX Miles . I had Misfires on Cylinder 1 Past 17 PSI -- and I tested with Low Compression and 40% leak down loss on Cylinder one. I was leaking into the cylinder Crankcase so I am Guessing the piston rings have failed – Moral of the story –…. If you play with fire.. you eventually get burned!

I will know more on the cause of the damage If I decided to crack the block open and investigate. I had my car running FBO with TBI – running straight e85% maxing out the turbos so I guess I had it coming. Guys be gentle to your cars.

Here are a few pictures of the current situation – I am doing this all out of my garage – THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE- TOTALLY DOABLE if you are mechanically inclined and have the back for it. I have about a total of 10 Hours into the Job and the motor is out – and I am half way through stripping the OLD motor. I am not rushing I am Cleaning everything piece by piece to make sure this thing looks as clean as possible when its back together.

THANKS TO DANIAL LONGER (95ludelove)– for coming over and giving me a hand this Saturday and installing the INDEX 12 injectors onto the new motor. IF you need INJECTORS INSTALLED AND CODED HE is your GUY PERIOD!

You can find him on t PNW N54 group Facebook. - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1011...1658558895306/ (Thanks Todd)

If you guys ever find yourself in this situation, let me know – I can save you tons of $$$$$.

Enjoy – I’ll keep adding pictures as I progress.

I know someone else who had to replace an engine after running some mix of ethanol. Good luck with the swap

I dont think it was the mix of ethanol that did it. But i am have no proof to say it wasnt. I might decide to investigate further, i will have to see how busy I get.. I have a few things going on here soon.

Not a fan of TBI, there is no way to guarantee even flow to each cylinder, consider direct port.

hey man, I see you have done quite a few walnut blasts. what would it take to either
a.) get mine done, I'll do everything, you could just drink my beer.
b.)borrow/rent your unit from you. you can still drink my beer.

Damn dude! Way to go! Doesn't it feel good to work on your own stuff. Guys around my house come by and say "what's happening in Joe's Garage now?" hahaha

When I was welding up my exhaust for the PE Mod, the pizza guy stuck around and talked to me about what the hell I was doing. He was so interested and awe struck on what you can do with these Bimmers.

Very cool project! Did you run into any issues in the process? What all should someone else look out for when attempting a complete engine swap?
