CNN Money has posted FORTUNE's list of the world's most admired companies. The general non-industry specific list is compiled from a survey of businesspeople from all industries. The industry-specific list (i.e. Motor Vehicles category) is derived from a survey of each specific industry, according to peer companies.

BMW tops the Motor Vehicles sector and was voted as the No. 1 Most Admired company by their automotive industry peers. Volkswagen group was No. 2 and Daimler No. 3. In terms of global companies overall, BMW ranked No. 19. Apple was No. 1. Lists posted below:

it's a testament to the company that i'm not even surprised by the fact that they ranked number 1 on this poll.

BMW and Apple are definitely two of my favorite companies.

Does the "Industry Champions" part represent the full list of all industries covered in the survey? If so, it seems very strange that none of them start with any letter of the alphabest higher than G.

Any insight on how Hyundai got to 4th place? I also wonder how Audi would have compared if they could spin that out of VW for this comparison.

Hyundai has come a long way in the last 10 years. You might not like their cars, but they are probably among the most improved automakers of the past decade as far as sales, build quality, and value.

Well, build quality for the first 20k miles or so... but that's where the value comes in.

the #1 reason that peoples request for high revving naturally aspirated motors and lower car weights will go to the wayside and heavier and more bloated cars will be produced.

as much as i love bmw, they aren't making anything that i can really set away money for, vs porsche, which has the gt3 rs

VW is a "minority" shareholder of Porsche at 49.9% ownership and owns Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and more.

This is a list of what businesspeople and analysts think, not necessarily the same as what the end-user think, us the drivers. Of course, conventional wisdom suggest that since BMW relies on it's superior products to sell and maintain it's reputation, then what the customer and business analysts think should be the same. That point is debatable, but if you look at it from a profitability or return on investment angle, then BMW absolutely delivers.

However, from the customer angle, contrary to conventional wisdom, does BMW still deserve that high mark? It's a question of what is important to the driver (i.e performance and handling and overal driveability) vs the business folks, and there is a big divergence there in reality. Customers complain of unreliable and complicated electronics? Poor service from Bimmer dealers? That's because the demand is so high for bimmers that dealers can afford to slack off in customer service. Of course, at some point, this attitude will bite them in the ass, but we haven't reach that point yet...

Definitely.

BMW also enjoys the unique position of being one of the very few large companies that is privately held by long term share holders. They can thus implement strategies for the next 10-20 years even if current valuations take a hit. Freedom from speculation and share price anxiety is also a huge plus in the business world.

The top 50 looks like its based on a stock portfolio more than personal taste. It was a survey of business people.

My 1st car, back in 1995, a 1992 hyaundi excel hatchback was at about 4200 rpm at 75 mph.. Haha. The road noise on that car was something else.
