Notes on a 2011 335i with Stereo (6-speaker) system install

Customer wanted a complete overhaul of the standard Stereo system with the goals of much higher clarity and definition regardless of volume, and bass impact while keeping all the OEM features intact, including no OEM wires cut, spliced or tapped. Budget of less than $2000...

Items installed:

- JBL MS-8 DSP Processor
- Alpine PDX-5 amp
- DLS P4S (front)
- Alpine SPS-410 (rear)
- OEM Individual Audio coaxial (center speaker)
- Kicker SSMB8 (underseat)
- ID10 subwoofer (VP Electricity trunk enclosure)
- OEM tweeter pods
- OEM center speaker grill
- OEM CD Changer trunk trim
- SSMB8 spacers (jtsherri)
- Stereo harness with woofer jumpers

Quick photos (no DIY, sorry):

DLS P4S:

DLS silk tweeters in OEM tweeter pods:

OEM Individual Audio coaxial center speaker:

OEM 6.5" woofers:

SSMB8 spacers:

Woofer jumpers (once the OEM woofers are disconnected the OEM HU connection to the front speakers is cut (OEM parallel wiring). The jumpers re-establishes that connection):

SSMB8 installed:

MS-8 with PDX-5:

Stock-look/space saving trunk with VP Electricity's trunk sub enclosure with ID10:

Notes:

- OEM HU could not accept recoding to HiFi, so the MS-8 had to be configured to remove the OEM signal EQ curve by selecting "input setup". The difference between using input setup or not is total: the acoustic calibration simply cannot create any decent sounding curve out of this OEM HU.
- the MS-8 was set to power the center and rear speakers, the PDX-5 powered the front, underseat and ID10 trunk sub. The MS-8 internal amp (36W max into 4ohms) keeps up with the PDX-5 volume level, especially with the OEM Individual Audio coaxial as a center speaker.
- Front stage was strong, defined and balanced. The combination of the DLS P4S front component set with the OEM center was quite impressive. The DLS set was tested with just the OEM HU power and it really improved the stock sound by themselves, no harsh tweeter (output is adjustable) decent punch from the mids. Excellent component set.
- as too many MS-8 installs, no calibration will get the midbass at a decent level. The 31-band EQ and the mid adjustment do fix this issue manually.
- there was no issue with the sub level and cabin impact. The MS-8 blended the sub with the SSMB8 midbass seamlessly, with the benefit of having extra room to raise the sub level without distortion or overcoming the midbass for those occasions that the customer would want more sub bass.

How was the overall sound result? Well, anything will sound better than the stock 6-speaker Stereo but this combination simply sounded several times better than the OEM $1900 Individual Audio option in the M3 for about the same price. The customer was happy, so I am happy...

Nice job E. Those SSMB8s look so sexy with JTSherri's spacers! If I ever get down in your area, I will definitely look you up.

Wow Technic that was an awesome install. I'm looking to get something similar to this in the next month or so for my 07 e90, but for around $1000-1200. What would you recommend?

What are you looking for? DSP? Trunk sub? Basic HiFi upgrade?

No shop, only on-site installs.

The iDrive harnesses for the E60 are all sold out, and I don't think that I will have any to sell in the near future.

All sold out... Damn, now I need to try to find one. If I find one, can you do a $1500 install for me? Pretty Please!

I'm working on a new harness design for the iDrive in the E60 but I do not know when it will be available... we can discuss the install by PM.

I need help in ATLANTA!

Is there anyone that can do a slick stock-look replacement of the e90 base system in a 2011 328i? I have a budget of $1500 or less.

This is typical BMW rip-off. They will convince you to order a 45k car that has a worse than base toyota corrolla stereo system. They are greedy asswipes, and it is fraud for them to make the options impossible to decipher from the website and catalog. This is a major major flaw with BMW - sell crap at a premium price and hope you will take it because it is BMW.

Take runflat tires - what a ripoff those are! And BMW puts the worst, crappiest, CHEAPEST tires on its cars when you buy them. BMW is really fucking their US customers of late! Beware.

Technic. Could you please help me out a little here? What do I need to make that woofer jumper? Any original BMW parts of what kind of connector is that?

Looks kinda like the molex connectors you find in any desktop computer?

Regards..

I use left over flat pins from my other harnesses, they are not OEM.

If you want to use OEM parts (much more expensive) then use:

- Woofer housing (2): 61136901731
- Woofer housing pins (8): 61138364835

That will make two OEM PnP jumper plugs with 2 short wires each.

This was around $1800 in parts and $600 install. Install cost includes all the custom wiring, cables, spacers, jumpers and extra OEM parts required for the PnP.

I was supplying all the spacers, harnesses, and OEM parts and I was quoted anywhere from $1200 to $2500 labor and that did not include tuning since I was going to tune the MS-8 myself.

For that price, I would rather treat Technic to a trip to the Big Apple

Thank you so very much.. OEM parts ordered, total amount in Norway..
Just $33,- USD plus shipping, but this order is so small that it fits in an envelope together with the bill..

In a couple of days I'll have made my very own jumpers..

Don't know what I'd do without this forum..
