There is no excuse for wheel damage. I go to a local tyre fitter in Banbury. They don't have particularly fancy equipment, but always take care not to touch the rim with the tyre levers. If leverage is needed they only pivot the lever on part of the tyre removal machine.

So there is no reason, even on the most unsophisticated machinery even to touch the visible part of the wheel itself.
