Drifting with/without a limited slip diff

Does the addition of an LSD make coming out of a drift (regaining traction) a smoother process, or is it simply down to throttle modulation?

Most people wouldn't consider it a "drift" without an LSD but rather a slide.

An LSD would help in both those arenas--- putting the power down and coming out of the drift.

I'm no drifting expert, but just from my own experiences in letting the tail out, I feel LSD makes the entire experience more controllable, as opposed to if you had an open differential.

The reason I say this is because with a LSD, when you lose traction with one wheel, you get equal amounts of power to both wheels. This will cause both wheels to either grip, or spin, either way it's predictable and you can compensate with your throttle.

With an open diff, you get a dragging tire, and it's sometimes hard to predict which one it will be.

You dont always need an LSD to drift. Spool differentials do nicely too. But yes LSD is good

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm trying to find some videos of non-M bimmers with open diffs doing some controlled sliding and they all tend to be a little rougher looking.

Okay, right there at 0:40 is what I'm talking about. It's that annoying wiggle the car does when the tires regain traction at a different pace. Supposedly that car should have an E-diff, which seems to help a little, but that irk still persists apparently.

I don't think thats from the diff. The car snaps when it gains traction back i've seen a lot of M3s spin out because of this

I don't know but that looked pretty sweet for a car without an lsd. here is another crazy 135 driver shredding his tires. not as good as the first one but never the less...

LSD just makes it so predictable. I haven't drifted an open differential before.

That little wiggle you are seeing is just the weight shift and the driver slightly overcorrecting or under correcting too much as they gauge traction returning...
