Life of BMW Performance Exhaust

Hi Guys,

I know this question warrants a somewhat "it depends" answer. Humidity, salt on roads etc. The reason I ask is that there are used ones popping up here and there and I want to know what to expect out of a used one.

well to indirectly answer your question.....

shorter trips is what affect most exhaust systems most. short trips = more condensation = more water. the shortness of the trip sometimes does not allow all of the water to burn up and exit the system, letting it pool up inside.

What would the pooling of the water do to it though?

Certain types of metal + Water = Rust.

I thought these units were stainless. Doesn't that protect them from rust?

if it's stainless, it should last for a very long time. at least as long as a normal factory exhaust system. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it, assuming it's stainless.

Well that deals with the corrosion/rust issue, but what actually make an exhaust system wear out?

Type of fuel, exhaust gas temperatures, milage, and environment. Not all stainless steel is safe from rusting, a lot of companies use cheaper stainless that isn't as good or use aluminized which they pass of ass stainless. I doubt BMW does that though.

I guess it does all go back to "it depends" but the variables are a lot clearer now. To have a clearer idea of water build up inside and such I need to see what the inside of an exhaust system looks like and the way they work.

Anyone have an article or link to some good reading?
