Possibly a much better alternative to Alpine Upgrade....

I've just bought the Alpine upgrade but haven't had it installed yet. Very tempted to not as I came across a great product that instead of giving you a 2-way upgrade, this gives you a 3-way. The company is called Jehnert (Gmbh) and do some great doorboards builds too.

car-specific soundsystem
unique 200mm (8") JEHNERT FLAT-Line Woofer with inner Neodymium-magnet drive • 100mm (4") High-End-midrange • 26mm (1") Neodymium-Softdome-tweeter • with high performance and high stability under load

technical specifications soundsystem: 3 way
woofers per side: 1x 200 mm (8") JEHNERT flat line woofer with Neodymium drive
midrange drivers per side: 1x 100 mm (4") High-End-midrange driver
tweeter per side: 1x 26 mm (1") Neodymium-Dome Tweeter
crossover circuit: JEHNERT car-customized, acoustic measured
power handling nominal/peak: 2 x 130 / 260 Watt
frequency response: 40-22.000 Hz
impedance: 4 Ohm
sound characteristics: sparkling, dynamic sound package with enourmous forceful bass playback
recommended amplifier power: from 2x 120 - 160 Watt / 4 Ohm

high-quality GRP doorboards
BMW 3 E90/E91 specific 3-way »FLAT-Line« WOOFER system.
The unique construction of the JEHNERT 200mm (8”) Neodymium Flat-line woofer offers the perfect solution for an installation under the driver’s and co-driver’s seat. Installation of midrange in the original place in the car door. The original optics remains unchanged. The car-customized mounting adapter for the factory-provided points of installation are included in the scope of delivery. The powerful 3-way sound system provides excellent sound qualities.
Optional 3-way “passive” or “semi-active” actuation possible.

TIP for the tweeter-installation:
There are two different original mirror triangles - with or without "prepared installation". With "prepared installation": Only insert the tweeter in the given cut-out. Without "prepared installation": The tweeter has to be adapted in the mirror triangle (cut-out), alternatively the mirror triangles with a "prepared tweeter installation" are available at your BMW dealer.

The kit comes in about £550-580 depending on stockist.

My local car audio specialist is about to fit this kit this week and he has gladly allowed me to come down and have a good listen once installed. Will let you know and give you my findings soon.

Here is their website for those interested http://www.jehnert.de/

I've got Jenhert door builds housing 2 sets of 6.5 inch components.

Their build quality is top notch but if I was going three way I'd personally be getting a set of JL ZR or XR650 2 way components and then getting two Earthquake SRS8 subs to mount under the seat.

Then again I'd just fit a sub in the ski hatch rather than bother with the shallow mount subs too Which is why I did exactly that

My local ICE guy is authorised JL dealer and says it's great but insisted the punch of these shallow subs was phenomenal Dave (Mega).

Yeah I'll definitely put up pics and video if I can for you to see :-)

Very nice.

So all this fits into the OEM housings and door cards/tweeter housings?

They replace the door cards with their own door builds as far as I'm aware (To get 6" components in. ) and you can either buy BMW professional tweeter covers ( as hifi doesn't have tweeters! just coax door speakers.. ) or else buy jenhert ones as part of the sale that are straight replacements

I found the door cards definitely required professional fitment though!

Looks good but needing new front door cards is a bit much imo. Are these speakers plug and play like the BSW kits in the US? Thats what I was looking to go for but the import costs alone are around £300!

That's great, but I can't see anything in your post about an external boot mounted amplifer, like the Alpine kit has.

Also your speakers are 4 ohm, compared with 2 ohm in the OEM equipment.

Looks like there are amps in the pictures. Two of them (one for each side of the car?)...

I've had a look at their website now..... it is missing an external amplifier as far as I can see. This means you are still driving everything off the headunit which is only 15W RMS plus ordinary quality and not enough power to drive the subwoofers.

Plus now with 4 ohm speakers instead of 2 ohm, it's only half as loud.

So are the units in the pictures only crossovers?

Who knows what those boxes are, but on the website there are no specs of any kind for an amplifier and it talks instead about RECOMMENDED amplifiers "recommended amplifier power: from 2x 120 - 160 Watt / 4 Ohm"

If it came with an amp, they would not need to recommend one.

My first guess is, if you put this in, it won't work properly because you are going from OEM 2 ohm speakers to 4 ohm aftermarket speakers.

My ICE guy commented that the mids fit straight into OEM housing so there is no requirement of any alterations.

Yes there is no amplification but if you were planning to remove the stock subs and replace, you'd need power to run them anyway. In total, include amp shouldn't set you back any more or probably than going the roundabout route of buying separates as many have done here.

Have a look at the mids then have a look at the OEM mids on realoem.com and notice the difference.......

These aftermarket mids have 4 equal spaced mounting brackets vs 3 non equal spaced on BMW OEM mids. You will have to fabricate mounting brackets and/or start drilling the inside of your door.

Also you would need to recode your headunit for an external amp so that it has a line-out signal instead of a (badly) amplified signal which it will have now if you have the base stereo.

Look at the first picture buddy...do you notice the glass housing? The adaptors are provided with the kit. I provided all the technical information that clearly states this.

As for recoding, does this not have to be done with Alpine and ot even if you are powering SWS-8's?

Look at the clear perspex mounting adapters fitted to the mids in the picture on the LHS of the original post...

As long as the depth isn't an issue then no mods required...

Beat me to it.

The Alpine upgrade uses the amplified signal (speaker level) as the input.

I think a Vibe Litebox install works in the same way.

I'm glad you read the literature I provided lol...

Not very tech'd up so am I right in assuming that no extra work will be required than if you're installing a vibe or Alpine???

Ahh, I missed those plastic mounts in the first pic.

BMW messed with the headunit coding sometime in 2009 so if you car was built after then, then recoding of the headunit is required, even if you use the Alpine kit.
