Surely there's nothing stopping you using a speaker level amplifier though?

Unless the car is smart enough to detect the difference between the OEM speakers a speaker level amp (which I guess could be done if the input impedance of the amp is not the same as the OEM speaker resistance).

Well I would've thought that too....just as long as both impedance is the same.

Jehnert make some nice speakers (these included) these will run from the headunit however they will be seriously underpowered, I would suggest an external amplifier to gain their full potential, you will also be running the risk of damaging them if you try to run them to hard form the head unit, if they can be bi-wired then a 4 channel amp would be great giving you more control over the subs

Possible, but the headunit has a poor quality amplifier so you would be re-amplifing a poor quality signal rather than a clean line out signal.

I see your points...nothing worse than a poor signal being amplified. Surely the ICE boys have tricks up their sleeve to combat this??

Running any amplifier on a high level speaker input will degrade the sound quality, this is why BMW switch the head unit to a low level output to minimise distortion, this part of OEM headunits is the only real difference to aftermarket headunits nowdays, if OEM had preouts then they would be as good as any other midrange aftermarket headunit, in my experience of amplifying oem systems the route of the cables from the headunit to the amp and amplifier setup is absolutely crucial to gain the best sound quality.

yes the 335D and has the battery in the boot so keeping them away from the main power feed to the front of car is essential as this will give of interference, any decent installer will know this though

I'm sure when I had an Infinity basslink installed in my M3, it was connected via speaker line from the HK sub as well. Didn't sound too bad, but then again it was just low end bass.

With subs it does matter to some degree, however the low filter masks most of it.

I have yet to upgrade my car yet even though I have a garage full of JL Audio equipment, I can highly recommend JL's Cleansweep, it was designed especially for OEM applications.

Once you have yours installed please let me know what you think

Thing is I purchased the Alpine upgrade recently from someone here but haven't installed it yet. Like I said in my original post, I'm definitely swinging towards the Jenhert route but only after I hear the car my local ICE is doing.

Will definitely post up pics and video of the car once done :-)

I have listened to the Alpine upgrade and I will agree it is a nice improvement over the standard hifi system however it is no match for a high end system which yours will be

Yeah Jenhert does seems to be a notch above the Alpine set up. Guess cost needs to be factored into it...but think I should be able to do it for less than 750. Which in fairness is only 200 more than what the Alpine costs supplied and fitted
