Review: Vortex Tuning LeMans (BBS LM rep)

So this will likely be updated as time moves along. I don't think its 100% fair to review a set of wheels and just go off initial impressions. However, this will begin as such and then I will update after time has passed.. probably after a month, and then after 3 months, and then at 6 months. Let me note that I am just giving my opinion and your opinion could or may already differ. My overall experience has thus far been GOOD.

I began by contacting Kelvin with Vortex Tuning and told him I was interested in the LeMans wheel they send (BBS LM replica) and asked him for a fitment that would be aggressive but would not rub at all. I was advised by him that he recommends 19x9.5 ET20 for the rear and a fender roll. I asked about getting the face of the wheel painted black or gloss black and having the polished lip and he informed me:

Quote:
"We offer custom powder coating to solid colors, matte black included. But we don't offer polished lip when powder coating. The reason being we have a very high standard on finish. The polished lip is machined out of the factory. Custom masking will never be as perfect as what the factory multi-million dollar machines can do. For solid color the finish will be simply stunning."
I thought it was an interesting response and my mind wandered thinking that the wheel was a single piece wheel instead of two or three piece and that would hit the masking comment. Let it be known, I never actually asked if it was a one, two, or three piece wheel. But I also thought it could be a two piece wheel at a minimum with the bolts around the face of the wheel. I just want to make sure it's clear, so no one is mislead, those are for looks and are not actually functional.

When I received the wheels, I wanted to test the rear fitment out to see how close it was to the body of the car.

Wheel Specs:
19x8.5 ET35
19x9.5 ET20

Wrapped in Falken FK452. 235/35/19 and 265/30/19, respectively.

I knew I needed to get a fender roll done but since I'm sitting on Dinan Stage 1 (Koni Yellows with Dinan Springs) from previously sport suspension, I figured I may have a little more clearance than expected.

I drove the car around the immediate neighborhood and surrounding main streets to see how it did with bumps. The only rubbing I heard was the tires on the inner fender lining of the rear. However, I do hear what sounds like metal on metal in the front and I'm wondering if the rim is touching the suspension at all. It's a faint sound, it's when turning and its audibly coming from the front of the car.

I have scheduled the rear to be rolled this weekend just for the added clearance. I don't believe it would rub the fender but on a big enough bump, it could possibly do so.

I'm partially concerned removing the inner fender lining in the rear as I don't want a rock to be thrown up into the under body. This is my only complaint is the rubbing that comes from the tires touching that lining. I didn't want any rub whatsoever but I do love the way the wheels look, so it's kind of an acceptable thing for now (dont know if my opinion will change).

As for the quality, the wheels feel solid and the face/lip is impressive. The inside of the wheel, you can see it's not really a "high quality" wheel in terms of finish but no one sees the inside anyways and it gets covered in grime/grease eventually. Thus far, I am satisfied and will update after I get the rear rolled and investigate what the metal on metal sound may be.

Also something of interest.. The mount/balance, and BMW center caps were essentially thrown in. I paid the same price I would have paid if I ordered through their website, but the options to add those things are not available on their website. They also installed the TPMS.

The wheels themselves look great, the car itself looks great, but I would like to recommend a drop, and blacked out window trim, and possible a front lip spoiler too. That front end just looks awfully high off the ground to me.

Thanks for your suggestions but I love it the way it is. Only thing I might end up doing is an m-tech front. I like the window trim with the lip of the wheels, just personal preference.

Getting close to a month now. I got the fenders rolled and it seems to have solved about 95% of the rubbing I was experiencing with just myself in the car.

I haven't had passengers and normally don't, if only 1 passenger at max. The wheels have been good thus far, and I have noticed a slight vibration but nothing major. I need to get an alignment done after the fender rolling so maybe that will improve any vibrations as well.

Haha that is my dad. I went over because I had the wheels shipped there since I don't have the tools at my current place.

Yea, 70 Chevelle SS, his high school sweetheart. Back in high school he ditched the 396 and put a 454 big block in there. He wants to get it fully restored one day but he has to wait a bit for the housing market to recover (he does real estate).

The old wheels are sitting in boxes that these were shipped in. The tires are still in great condition but they are the stock RFT tires. I'm considering putting them up for sale but not sure yet.

Thanks for the kind words!

How bad is it? Have you contacted the vendor about this and what was their response?

It's noticeable. I'll snap a few pics of each wheel and post em tonight.

I contacted them through their website and no reply. Going to attempt to contact them through here.

Here is a rear wheel that is peeling.

Thus far, vortex_tuning on here has ignored my PM. Their warranty department emailed me back but once I gave an image to them showing the peel, it's been nearly 5 days and they have not replied at all.

They've now ignored my email and follow-up email for 5 days from last contact. I'm not expecting them to do anything now.. even though the peel is annoying and was not caused by any impact or chemicals.

For 7 months old, that should not happen unless you used something that's not safe to clean your wheels with.
Did those wheels come with a finish warranty?
If they continue to ignore you, then post up in the vendor comment section.

The only thing I've used on my wheels is a wet microfiber cloth and soft water from the hose.

They said in email about 6-7 days ago that the wheel finish is covered under warranty but not if they conclude that the finish was damaged by impact or use of chemicals on the wheels.

Of course, when I provided them with the information above of whats been used to clean them, and showed the picture with no evidence of impact, they have still ignored my emails.

I noticed all their vendor posts on here have been closed or disabled. I'm probably not going to get anywhere with this.

Honestly, I'd probably do a stop payment on it if you can and don't do it. Seems like they are going out of business and I would HIGHLY recommend NOT DOING BUSINESS with them.
