Suspension fix at Open Road BMW @ NJ

Sadly the steering for my 335IS E93 has been a bit wobbly and slanted left. So I brought the car to the dealership for repair. The quoted cost was $992 + $300 of labor to change out the bent strut. Is that a reasonable quote? Secondly, is this problem common in NY/NJ area due to potholes? It doesn't feel right but perhaps it's just my bad luck...

I think you can get it done at a shop for less than half that, assuming it's only 1 strut.

Btw, yours is '11; can't this be covered under warr? Have you done any suspension mods (incl. wheels)?

It might shock you to know how easy strut replacement is. And nope, bent struts not common. Bulged tires & cracked rims maybe, but not bent struts.

At that price, better include the alignment you'll have to get after R&R's done.

When replacing one strut, you should replace the opposite side as a matched set unless your ride's new new new - mileage? Did the dealer include that?

Half a tic....is this a strut adjustable from the driver's seat? Explains the cost some. If not, you should seriously consider FSD's for pothole control/absorption - score 4 for ~$1100 assuming same as other N54 engined 3's.

No mods, 22k mi, relatively new I suppose. I will call the dealership again on Monday to see if I can get a better description. I am not as familiar with the suspension setup so will need to do some reading... thanks for your inputs!

Too much milage to replace just one strut IMHO.

Unless you have adjustables, 4 FSD's looking a pretty good bet - consult CaptainAudio - he will guide you there. Although, I believe 2011's ride quality much improved vs my 2009.

LSD will transform your ride if you push it at all. Naw. You never go fast or explore cornering ability, do you?

Would changing my suspension set up void the manufacturer warranty?

I would bet on a bent control arm before a bent strut.

It would only void the suspension part. Not the rest of the car.

Hmm, bent strut? I'd take it to a local reputable shop and get a second opinion before forking out $1300 to the dealer.

You betcha, for the parts involved.

I did a total suspension replacement + LSD....utterly delightful! Now no BMW warranty on those parts. Don't miss that one bit. Not one. Grossly superior ride + performance.

Took it to an alignment shop after install. They proceeded to muck it up - had to put it back where ride height etc. should be....better now.

True Words: If you want it done right....you know....
