Absolutely. I find myself wanting more mid range all the time. Where is the intersection of your mishap again

Here is the latest....

The current estimate is 40k. about 32k of that is just the engine and labor for the engine alone. So..... The insurance company doesnt believe BMWs word that the car needs a new engine. So this morning they are going to run the engine to test it and see if there are any problems. If the engine is still good, then they are just going to fix the car; however, if the engine is bad then they are going to total it and cut me a check. That is the way it is looking right now.

My concern is this, how much testing can they really do on a car that isnt drivable?! I mean really. They are just going to let the engine run for 5 min sitting there and if it doesnt make any noises or shut off then they will say it is good? I am going to get reassurance that if they choose to fix the car and then I get on the freeway and the engine shits on me that they will replace it!

Either way, I am dying without my car! I even seen a sparkling graphite E92 M3 on the freeway yesterday and had to chase it!

wow, what insurance company do you use Andre? How the heck do they know if an engine is good or bad, they aren't the manufacturer. Bunch of idiots, if there are metal shavings in the oil, the engine has been compromised. I'd throw a fit if they say it's good and get a second opinion or push to have BMW NA say it's not good. Sounds pretty suspect man, the engine is clearly not in good health at this point.

Sounds like you are in the middle of a pissing contest between the dealer and your insurance company. Sucks. I would ask them to do compression and leak down tests, as well as inspect the cylinder walls with a borescope. If you plan on keeping the car for the long haul, what assurance will they give you that if the engine fails at a later date, it will be taken care of? I can tell you right now that if anything happens under warranty to that engine, the warranty claim will be DENIED! Sticky, sticky mess...
If they end up totaling the car pm me a price for the front splitters and rear spoiler please
To be continued...(insert dramatic "Buhm Buhm Buhhhhm" here)

This is my point exactly. It is BMWs reccomendation that I get a new engine. If the insurance company says "no, that one is still good" then BMW shouldn't have to warranty that engine. I am sure that they will work it out but damn! It does feel like a pissing contest. I am going to make sure they do some fairly extensive test.

They need to run the full gamut, metal shaving are not good, especially if they got to the point that it concerned the dealer (they know the difference between break-in metal deposits and metal from damage). The damage might not be readily apparent, but even a little score on the cylinder walls or damaged ringland can have bad consequences, especially in an M engine which already has very tight tolerances. Not like this is a toyota engine that may be able to take some abuse and have performance not affected by it.

They are probably just going to make sure that it doesn't make any noises and that it gets up to normal operating temperature.

I recently just had a monte carlo that snapped the CV joint and tossed it into the oil filter. Customer noticed smoke from the engine bay and pulled it over to the side of the road, got out and looked for damages. Got the car towed to my work and the advisor drove it to the rear parking lot without any oil in it. I replaced parts and put in oil and the thing ran fine. Who knows how long the car ran without any oil inside the engine. But, based on what I have seen, I don't think they are going to replace the engine. Just my thought. Keep in mind how many insurance companies I deal with on a daily basis and I know for a fact that they will only replace something that is visually broken or obnoxiously loud enough for them to hear.

I have a feeling you are right. If they say it is good and it really is good, then great! I just want my car back. If they say it does need a new engine then I will get the Dinan and great! If they say its a total then I will get a new one with a better deal and make a couple gs plus get to do Euro and Performance delivery so great!

GM engines and BMW M engines are on completely different playing fields. Back in high school I worked in a garage that had the local Post office account. I can't tell you how many postal trucks drove through for gas with NO oil in the engines at all. We could hear those Iron Dukes knocking away, would add four quarts of oil and send them on their way with no problems whatsoever.

Running a cast iron block with no oil > running aluminum block with no oil

If it gets totaled, I'd say it's time to switch brands. Time for a GTR or C63 or CTS-V or something that is different.

I thought about it but im not sure anything else has the same interest for me. Not to mention the culture around the brand. I will probably stick with the M3, although the new mustang GT500s are pretty sweet even though I never thought of myself as a mustang type of guy. Also, I am interested to see the new Jeep Cherokee SRT8 when it comes out. That could be a possibility. Other then that, I might consider an S5 as well. IDK

BTW, I noticed that an S4 wasent on your list of suggestions

Because that's what I have... I'd suggest it but I think you are more of a coupe guy. I am too but I just tried the 4 door for a couple years to see how I like it. S5 is sweet but that V8 is underpowered at this altitide and until they put my engine in it I wasn't to sold on it (and it was 10 grand more), maybe wait for the RS5 haha... just a bit spendy for that one, I think they are starting at $105 grand

Maybe I will go test drive one. Although, I doubt the will let me when I roll up in my 2004 Dodge Dakota.

If you're open to Mustangs, what about the Boss 302? Faster around Laguna Seca than the M3, which is remarkable considering Ford still uses a solid axle in the rear.

Apparently you can tune those very very easily to have some massive HP numbers. After all it is supercharged. Vincent knows some of the mods.

One thing, of course the Caddy isn't an M3 but I bet that power is just addictive.
