No fault found charge when even under warranty

Hi all,

Just wondering what peoples experiences were when trying to get a few rattles looked at under warranty. I asked my local dealer and they seemed happy to help, but said to me that if no fault was found then the dealer would charge for his time as they can't claim it back from the warranty

Is this how it works for all dealers? Never had this issue before with dealers from other car manufacterers so thought this was odd.

make them test drive the car, with you to prove rattle, before work begins. Pay nothing if under warrenty.

This is indeed how it works. However if it's squeaking, and it's not just you being very anal.. It's legitimately loudly squeaking: Then obviously there's a fault.

Don't get confused comparing "no fault found" with "fault not fixed".

If it's sqeaking loudly they'll obviously hear that fault! So they won't charge you If for whatever reason they are unable to "get" the squeak: They'll have to try again. Still won't charge you.

I wouldn't worry..

thats new if the car is under warranty extended or new any research for faults is free. Unless they changed used warranty rules, certain on new its the case.

I would query it with service manager or BMW

So, you have rattles - but if the dealer can't locate and fix them its somehow your fault and they will charge you?

Have you wasted their time in the past? If not, I wouldn't tolerate that at all. Reject politely but firmly, say its not acceptable and will report them to BMW if they don't withdraw their "threat".

What are the rattles? Dealers are notorious for being crap at fixing them - though there are often lots of fixes in the workshop manuals - the first BMW mini had loads of official rattle fixes (dashboard probably most famous).

Is the car under extended warranty or std 3 years? Did you buy the car from this dealer? If you did then I would say the dealer is out of order!

If however you didn't get the car from the dealer doing the work then I suppose you will need to argue it out with BMW as in this case it wouldn't be fair for them to give a good will gesture to a non customer.

The car is still under new car warranty (i.e. remainder of the 3 years) so I would have thought that to be different than Approved User car warranty policy.

The supplying dealer has sorted them (according to them) but I have a feeling it may not be as its their third attempt at sorting for free.

Its a slight window and parcel shelf rattle. I can live with to be honest but shouldn't have to. The fact that they would charge 'if no issue found' is what another dealer who I've used often has told me.

I think it may be safer to just live with it temporarily and mention it when it goes in for servicing in November .

(This was late last year:-) Mine was under AUC warranty but I sent it in for two issues.
White powder from vents and intermittent stalling.
Had to authorize 60 investigation fee, hmm ok.
They kept it for three days and changed the condenser in the aircon, but couldn't replicate the intermittent fault so still charged me the 60.....
Errrr, WTF!
Bit of a "to do" but they wouldn't budge so I paid.
On my way out of the car park it stalled.
Needless to say I turned around and went back in.....

Eventually (and I mean eventually) I was reimbursed by a cheque in the post.
Some months later they also managed to fix the issue.
Ahhhh, dealers....

It seems to be a standard response, I'm afraid.
