Cell Phones lead to cancer?

http://www.abc.net.au/rn/breakfast/s...11/3232397.htm

I've heard about how harmful cell-phones are because of the radiation they emit but now it's apparently official that there is a strong correlation between cell-phone usage and an increase in risk for cancer. There have been over a dozen independent tests and studies done showing this and I think people should become more aware. I'm thinking of switching to blue-tooth because as long as the cell phone is an inch or more away from the body, it isn't harmful.

Welcome to 10 years ago. This study has been going on for a long time.

If my phone is on the table in front of me is it emitting enough radiation to cause this? Or does the radiation only occur during calls? Text messages count?

I should ask my doctor hrmm

The only difference is the World Health Oraganization is making the statement now.
Use the speaker phone or Bluetooth if possible.
If anyone has had a cell go off near a computer, you'll get all kinds of interference from the speakers and sometimes even the screen, so it's a decent amount of engergy.

This is NOT old news. Before it was simply speculation, where it was hard to tell which study was being funded by which interests and so forth.

This time the WHO has involved itself and made a statement.. that's significant and suggests that the existing studies linking cellphones to brain cancer do hold merit.

I'm not sure if this is the same meta analysis I read almost a year ago.

From what I recall, cell phone usage is NOT associated with any significant increase in cancer except with the cohort that had the highest usage of cell phones.

If I have some free time, I'll dig through my papers and see if I still have the study.

EDIT:

It is indeed the same study (the Interphone study). Here's a summary of the text. You need PubMed to access the entire study, I believe.

http://www.iarc.fr/en/media-centre/p...fs/pr200_E.pdf

"ORs were < 1.0 for all deciles of lifetime number of phone calls and nine deciles of cumulative call time. In the tenth [highest] decile of recalled cumulative call time, ≥1640 h, the OR was 1.40 (95% CI 1.03-1.89) for glioma, and 1.15 (95% CI 0.81-1.62) for meningioma; but there are implausible values of reported use in this group."

An OR (Odds ratio) uses statistical methodology for calculating the odds that an individual would have gotten cancer (meningioma or glioma). As you can see, only in the group with the HIGHEST cumulative phone users, was there a signficant risk for glioma. The Meningioma risk is not significant (see the confidence interval).

The conclusion of the study is that more studies are needed. You need to be very careful when drawing conclusions from a retrospective study, as they are fraught with biases. In Medicine, retrospective studies are NEVER considered factual and defining. The gold standard is a progressive, randomized trial - which has yet to be done. This yet again shows how the media hypes up scientific data that has yet to reach any conclusion *sigh*

Where do you get "strong correlation" from? All the WHO said is "possible", and then through it in the same group 2B risk catagory they put coffee in.

Cell phones don't give off ionizing radiation, so there's really nothing to indicate you should be concerned.

Actually that's only if you're on an Edge like network or you have an older phone

anything using 3G doesn't have that affect on speakers anymore

Indeed.

There's a strong correlation with cancer and breathing in most U.S. cities. Far as I know, most people choose to breathe.

You say that like it wasn't the case before. Humans didn't invent radiation... Fact of the matter is, with longer life spans comes longer exposure to environmental factors. With better medicine comes better diagnostics.
