$300 for oil service!!!

Does that sound correct? I called a local shop since my 06 e90 was approaching 45,000 and that was the quote I got. Includes oil (synthetic), filter, A/C cabin filter, safety inspection, rotate the tires.

This is the first oil change after the warranty expired that I need to take care of myself. But I was shocked when he told me the price.

I can't see where parts would be more than $80 or so, and unless their labor rates are like $200/hour I don't see where the price adds up?

Is it an indy shop or the dealer? It's tough to believe an indy shop could be that expensive. The dealer definitely can though. In fact, if you're going to spend that much and it's not the dealer, you might as well get a quote from the dealer.

Is doing it yourself an option? Order oil, get yourself a $50 set of ramps from Walmart and a 17mm socket and it takes half an hour to do.

But then he needs to buy the filters, the little gasket, and all that, plus the mess in the garage, I would pay to have it done.

Tishler or whatever it is sells the entire package for $65 shipped. I'd recommend the wrench to get the filter out as well, which is maybe another $15.

I'm just throwing it out there for you as it's very simple to do. I just did it on my car over the weekend for the first time and it extremely easy.

Just buy the tischer kit and bring it to decent shop to swap oil. Should be no more than 15-30 bucks for labor. The dealership shop rate is over 100 an hour, oil/filter + air filter + charcoal cabin filter so 300 sounds about right.

buy parts and do it yourself or buy parts and bring the car to any mechanic...labor should be same as any other oil change maybe a bit more.

Wow, I wish I had that kinda money to throw away. It takes me five min to change my oil on my E90. The filter comes with the gaskets btw. If you love your car you will put TOTAL QUARTZ (BMW recommended and aproved) oil and a filter(10bucks) every 4000miles.

Sounds right for a BMW dealership or something but i know someone who owns a European car shop (european road and racing) and he charges a little over $100 for oil and oil filter. Using factory recommended oil etc. He said it's called "upsell" where they charge a lot more. But basically what I'm saying is you can get it for cheaper haha.

I think I am mechanically challenged, I can do wonders with computers, scripts, and so on, but I can wrench properly for some reason.

All of this stuff is super easy and not a hassle at all. Dealers make big profits off of these simple 15 minute jobs that they charge and hour of more of labor for.

This was an Indy shop...I'll call the stealership to compare. Yes I can change the oil myself, I do it now on my 04 330ci. I also have the monster 17MM socket
The problem will be resetting the "Service needed" light.

Change every 4,000 miles? Isn't that overkill with synthetic oil? That's whole reason to get synthetic oil is to extend the time needed to replace the oil. I'm sure there are many threads on this debate.

I live near Dinan so let me give them a call and see how much they charge.

If you are going to DIY these maintenance items, you'll need more than the "monster" 17MM socket. You'll need a 8MM nut driver to R&R the cabin air filter, 5MM or 6 MM (I forget which) Torx driver for the engine air filter, and if you get the BMW oil cap wrench, it takes a 27MM socket or wrench (or a large adjustable) to remove the oil filter cap.
