body shop to paint carbon fiber part in DC area

Hi there. I did a search for painting carbon fiber in this area and found this thread where someone got a lip painted at Zamora's, but I'm not sure if it was CF. I called Zamora's and asked if they'd paint CF and they said they would but wouldn't warranty it. That's fine by me, but I wanted to check if anyone knows a place that preps and paints CF properly. I've read it's not much different than normal automotive painting, but the surface should be sanded (I can do that) and primed (I don't want to do that) with something so it won't be porous. I want to get an Arkym Aerosport E90 M3 CF front lip spoiler painted.

Thanks

D&V auto in Sterling is a place I recommend. They do Ferrari and Lambo body work, so I'm assuming they have expertise in CF painting.

I checked out their web site and they look amazing. I'll give them a visit. Thanks much!

That was me who had the lip painted by Zamora's. They do good work but not the best in the area. If you want to see magic, try Wagonwork http://www.yelp.com/biz/wagonwork-co...ter-alexandria My lip is just the OEM polyurethane so nothing fancy.

Oh yeah, I've heard of Wagonwork before but totally forgot about them. Thanks for the info. I've called both D&V and Wagonwork and they said no problem.

Wagonwork has changed ownership and gone down hill. The painter from Wagonwork started his own shop called Euro Pros in Gaithersburg.

Could be, and I'll check it out that way, but I want this thing to look as "stock" as possible.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll check them out too. They'd be much closer for me as well.

I was on the fence about what I wanted to do with the lip... but if you were to paint, I'd recommend you do a flush mold for the OEM look. There is 2 (I think) on M3Post that have their Arkym lips molded... and they happen to be Jerez.

But, CF on Jerez looks good imho. This is how my car currently sits.

X2 Euro Pros. Derek (ex head painter from Ww) is great and he runs a quality operation. They are more pricey but you get what you pay for in this case.

Man are you serious? I actually need to go back and ask for warranty work from them. I had a new bumper painted and installed by them and I can definitely see the clear coat fall off every time I do a power wash I guess I will try Euro Pros too. When you say "painter", was it just one of the employee or the previous owner open up Euro Pros?

The head painter that actually does all the painting. If your clear coat is falling off, I'm betting you got it done at Wagonworks after they changed management.

hm that was last year, 2010 January. Anyways, I am not sure if I should ask Wagonwork to warrant their work after seeing this post. I just called Euro Pros for a rough estimate to repaint my whole car. This is a 02 MB. Derek quoted me $4-6 K. Is that reasonable?

For a superb job, yes, most definitely... I'd say more so along the lines of $4k however. $6k is ridiculously high.

No, Derek left a few yrs ago and Wagenworks has been in a tailspin since. Derek was their head paint/body guy. I would still ask Wagonworks to fix it, but i wouldn't be surprised if they give you a hard time about it.

$4k - 6k doesn't sound unreasonable for a QUALITY repaint. If you can get them to do it for $4k then even better.

If you're thinking about paying Euro Pros to do it again, you mind as well get another estimate from D&V. I'd say they're just as good as Euro Pros and charge slightly less.

What's flush mold? Fill in the gaps so it looks like a one-piece front end? Your car is sweet BTW, it was your thread that convinced me to buy the Arkym. Can't see the CF weave in your pics though, almost looks painted.

Thanks bro!

And yup, flush molded lip looks amazing man.

I have a clear bra on there so the CF doesn't photograph well. And might I add, the bra already saved a rock ding in the lip! Hit up Raja @ Ventureshield if you want one done.

Do you have the flat black or black chrome kidney grille? How about your side/fender grille, are those black (hard to see in the pics).

Flat black, kept the sides chrome. Hard to notice the sides so don't really see myself spending money to change em.

So I got a quote from Derek at Euro Pros. I figured he had done a lot of "custom" body work but it seemed to me he thought this an odd request. $1,700 is the price (just for the the molding, I already have the lip). I don't know if that's reasonable? Certainly I could get a lower price from somewhere else but not get the quality or peace of mind I'd get from Euro Pros. I guess I'll try D&V as well but I'd have to take several hours off work to see them.
