335d vs 335i

Hi there,

just wondering which car out of these wonderful two cars is actually the quicker on the road and on the drag strip?

I know bmw quote the diesel as being slightly slower but i would have thought it would be slightly quicker being only 20bhp down and over 100 ib ft torque more?

any comments/discussion welcome

thanks

carl

The 335i is quite a bit quicker, but the 335d is one bad a$$ deisel.

how do you know this? have you compared the two side by side?

any reasoning on why it is quicker with the power and torque levels they make?

Not personally, but you're welcome to disagree. If you want, we can prove it at Santa Pod sometime (this is a friendly invitation).

No 335i from the Pod, yet. I will be glad to make a few runs after break-in (only at a few miles). It may take a few weeks, but I would make it up there to watch until break in.
Here ya go.

Dyno figures seem to suggest that the 335i makes more hp than BMW suggest as well.

That car was computer tuned and drag radials. Don't know how much HP to the wheels. I imagine around 320hp or so.
The best stock time was 13.251 @ 104 mph.

If BMW under estimate the hp figures for each car... what are the real figures?

im not sure, i have a bmw 318is e36 (which has been neglected since ive been driving the 335d) and the book figure for that was 10.2 0-60 but i once did a 16.6 quarter which would indicate approx 8.0-8.5 0-60

Talking 335 Turbo Tuner Dyno by European Car

Since you guys are in the UK here is our dyno sheet for the unit that Raggie had us ship him over to the UK. This was done on 91 octane which is much lower than yours over there.

On a dragstrip with the engine revving at full belt through the gears, the 335i is definitely quicker than the 335D, although not significantly.

I will be going up to the pod again in May, but this time with a new software in my D, quoted figures 340BHP and 680Nm torque. In the right conditions, I hope the D will yield a low 13 and 106MPH run. Terminal speed is a better judge of the car's capability on a drag strip than just the time.

I will also get my car dynoed by an independent party before and after the re-map.

However, the more interesting aspect is how would the 335D peform on under hard driving conditions, ie. a full lap at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. I hit my best 8.20 lap Bridge-to-Bern in my E46 M3, will be interesting to see how the D cope. Roll on June and July.

Nick,

My E46 330d (184bhp) managed 8m47 BTB, 4 up at the Ring. I'd expect a 335d to be somewhere between that time and the M3. I'm taking my 535d out there later this year. Could be fun to meet up over there.

Cheers
Matt
