We must all have our reasons!
Price was not even a major factor for me, and I still chose the 335is.
I do not need the advanced "sportiness" of the M3. Anything more than the 335is would only get me in trouble. I think both cars look great in their own ways, and this one gets plenty of looks on the highways. The 335is is definitely more unique, which I also like. I even get "thumbs ups" from M3 drivers! This is also my everyday commute & cruising-with-the-ladies car, which I feel lends itself more to the 335is than an M3. I bought the retractable hardtop convertible, which was another reason I like the 335is over other models with softops. I also have every possible package/option installed so that it is fully loaded. I simply have no desire for an M3 since I am so happy with my 335is.

Looks wise, the 335is looks like its trying real hard....the rear bumper is horrible, the older mtec kits are way cleaner, and personally the front without fog lights looks terrible. The angles are all sharp and rigid. Look at an M next to a 335is and there is really no comparison. Everything flows better with the M.

If you are willing to look, there are plenty of M's out there.....I am looking for one now and came across several just from my dealer searching for me. Privately, they are all over the place.

IMO the 335is is way overpriced for nothing special at all. The folks buying this seem to be mostly uninformed consumers that always buy new cars simply because they are new models. No past 335 owner (that has had numerous problems with their n54) in their right mind would ever purchase a 335is powered by the same motor that has been giving us all headaches since 2007.

Its not always about the money - I could have gotten an M3 for not that much more but I chose the 335is. For me the 335is is a much more practical choice as a daily driver. I loved the power delivery and the low end grunt of the N54 in the 335 that I used to have and expect the 335is to be even better. From what I gather the M3 comes into it's own only past 6000 rpm and once you start driving it like that you can expect the gas mileage to be in the 12s and 13s. Not something that I could justify. While the M3 is an amazing machine it's potential cannot be fully explored unless you took it to the track, and having been up close and personal with a tire wall at VIR a few years back in my E36 M3, I have no intention of taking a 50K+ car to the track. The E36 will have to do for that. So getting the 335is over the M3 was essentially a no brainer for me and in fact, it was much harder to decide between the 335is and the S4.

The June 27 issue of AutoWeek just came today and they announced that the 335is Coupe was the hands-down winner of their 2011 Fantasy Camp:

"No Contest - For Autoweek/ZF Fantasy Campers, One Coupe Stood Out From The Crowd"

"But by the final tally, nothing could touch this year's AutoWeek/ZF Fantasy Camp winner: the BMW 335is."

Cars that were driven included the Audi A5 2.0T, Cadillac CTS, Chevy Camaro SS, Dodge Challenger SRT8, Ford Boss 302 Mustang, Honda Accord EX-L, Infiniti G37 IPL, Mercedes-Benz E350, and VW GTI. These cars were selected by 50,000 votes cast by AutoWeek readers as the best sports coupe for under $50,000.

The BMW had the best 0-60 time with the exception of the Camaro and the Mustang. With the exception of the VW at 3,034 lbs., it was the lightest car at 3,571 lbs. The Dodge tipped the scale at over 4,000 lbs.!

Base prices ranged from 27,200 for the VW to $51,100 for the BMW. BMW was had the highest "as tested" price at $61,025.

Interestingly the BMW 335is was the only car in this test with a base price over $50K and as-tested price WAY over $50K. As much as I love my 335is, it doesn't seem like it belonged in that "best sport coupe for under $50,000" comparison. Should've tested a 335i instead and the BMW would've likely still won.

The 335is can be had for under $50k.

I don't think its unfair, depends on options. Strange that the event seemed to show a 335i yet they had a 335is.

Happy Owner

I have had my 335is since July3rd of last year. I only put 7800 miles on it so far, but every last one has been exhilarating. The softness of the tires is my only complaint considering I have had to replace my tires already all around and twice in the right rear. Outside of that, the exhaust is all it is hyped up to be, the DCT is better than any other BMW I have driven, and the style features get head turns even in my town of Beverly Hills where everyone and their mother has a luxurious whip. Mine is fully loaded and the only other small complaint is the sound system could use more kick but I took care of that myself. I had the choice of getting a 2010 m3 OR my 335is and I am so happy with my choice. I'd love to chip it and just blow all the other M's out of the water already and show what a 700$ difference makes when there is a 20% difference in base price. All these people saying how dumb it is to get a 335is instead of an m3 are slightly handicapped mentally. The day I picked mine up I literally watched a brand new m3 owner shake his head in disappointment at how foolish of a decision he made. Oh yea, doing 160 on the way to Vegas felt like butter, really if I weren't so worried about the highway patrol I woulda done 160 the whole way! I LOVE my 335is.

Very cool video!
But I thought we had a limiter of only 150 mph. Did you bypass that?

When I was on the Autobahn in an unlimited speed zone, after the 1200 mile break-in period, I took my 335is Coupe to 160 MPH/260 KPH several times. I wondered about this too. When I put the order in on my car in January the BMW site used to say that the speed limiter was increased from 130 MPH to 150 MPH. For whatever reason, I can't find that anymore, and it appears that is has been deleted. It just says that the speed limiter is increased.

When I posted on another forum that I did 160 MPH I was told that the speed limiter was actually 155 MPH and the 5 MPH difference was due to the fact that the speedometer reads slightly higher than what the speed actually is.

All I know is that driving at an indicated 160 MPH on the speedo (pegged) is a rush! It takes immense concentration and is difficult to maintain that speed for very long because of traffic, curves in the road, etc. It will probably never happen again in this car. There's just no place in the US that you can do this legally and safely, except for the Texas Mile.

If the person posting the above video did this on a public road outside of Germany he's an idiot. I also hope that he increased the tire pressure to the pressure indicated in the manual for driving over 100 MPH otherwise he put himself and his passenger at risk of a tire failure. I also question the wisdom of posting a video on the Internet where he is clearly identifiable and driving at 160 MPH.

M2 if you will... no, I will not.

How does this guy still have a job... not like he's staying in physically fit for it.

Clearly I knew what I was doing. Whatever the actually speed was it read out to 160 mph did it not? I bought the car for a reason.... This is a private road. Why is this other person wondering how I have a job? I bought the car and reside in beverly hills as you can see... Regardless, a rush it was.

I'm not sure how this is clear that you knew what you were doing, but clearly you have now gone back and changed your description on YouTube to read "on my private road" instead of "on the way to Vegas" which it originally said because that's what I read before you apparently changed it. Way to avoid any possible liability and having your insurance company find out. Next time don't don't show your face or the tats on your left elbow, although almost anyone could find out your identity through your YouTube account.

No one was questioning that the speedo read 160 MPH, the question was did you bypass the speed limiter in order to exceed 150 MPH, because that's BMW used to say was what the speed limiter was raised to on an a 3 Series with the M Sport Package or a 335is. The BMW website no longer states what the current speed limiter is, just that it's been increased.

I know from personal experience that the car will go to an indicated 160 MPH on the speedo without bypassing the speed limiter because I did it on the Autobahn several times during the European Delivery of my 335is, where it's perfectly legal. Why it goes to an indicated 160 MPH when the speed limiter was supposedly raised to "only" 150 MPH is explained in my post above.

The comment saying "how does this guy still have a job..." wasn't aimed at you, it was aimed at the guy doing the Motorweek review.

Are you "clear" now?

Best part is the video I uploaded is of my buddy driving. I know all about liability and how an insurance company would do anything to screw you over so my buddy zilla is in this particular video. I don't have any tattoos at all in fact haha. I keep the videos of me driving tightly secured and unreachable by anyone but myself just incase someone were to tr and actually press me against such ridiculous things and meticulously go through details in videos to try and get me in trouble. I'm just the idiot letting my buddy take the car for a spin with no control over the situation

Thank you, thank you very much. I don't understand why anyone would own a sports car and not push it to the max once in a while. Why else shell out 50k+?? When you get that 335i up to 160 let me know how much fun it is even if it takes you a bit longer

Actually sir I have a 2011 335I with a JB and have been OVER 160 numerous times on the Autobahn. So throw the JB in there and it is you that takes awhile to get there. Nice try though

And technically your buddy was driving and you were playing cameraman so you haven't pushed anything to the limit except for the record button
