Alpina D3

I am quite lusty for a D3.. what are peoples opinions of this car?

I really just want something a bit different to a normo 3er coupe, but am unsure if it is 'worth' the extra expense..

The new car i have specced up (lux pack [nav], switchtronic, dab, usb socket etc) is around £44k..

Quite apprehensive on ordering a new car tho, especially with the F30 coming soon, but a used one is a flier (but hard to find with the right options)..

i doubt there will be any discount on a new one either?

hmmm..

thoughts? :s

I assume you are talking new - in which case the D3 Bi Turbo. Same engine as the 123d with a few 'tweaks' - similar power to a 325d but very different in many other ways. There are a few owners on the site so you should get some 'first hand' feedback, but a nice alternative. However, the premium to 'spec' the car as a 'special build' is massive - it's based on the basic ES version of the 3.

yep, i am talking about the D3 Bi Turbo indeed

interestingly, on the option sheet that i have from the dealer there is no premium for bespoke build on the coupe.. i'll upload it in a bit.

i have test driven an 11 plate demo vehicle, but i was musing too much and someone nabbed it, bit pissed off tbh as the spec was great!

It was a lovely drive, and a million miles from my crashy M Sport..

First hand owner experience would be amazing!

How did the power compare to the 325d?

i wasn't expecting miracles, but the power deliver did not seem to have as much low end torque as what i currently drive..

i had read reviews previously that it behaved a lot more like a petrol engine, and i could kinda see where the journo was coming from now

if i whipped it into DS mode though, it was very nice, infact much nicer than the 325d.. and i did really enjoy the short stint i had in the car.. i think that perhaps a second viewing of the motor might be in order

That just doesn't sit right with me, no disrespect to 4 pot owners, but a performance arm of BMW, should be tuning either their whole range or the performance end of the range.

I suppose there's also the B3 biturbo . Although that said I remember reading that it is only about 1k cheaper than an m3. Your point is very valid though, a 6 pot diesel alpina would make far more sense.

44k for a d3 seems a hell of a lot of money to me - with a budget like that I'd be looking at a top spec 6 month old 6 cyl bmw.

...and 44k for a 4pot diesel somehow feels just too much.

1. New cars are expensive, but you get an intangible "feel good" feeling driving a car you bought from new. Or at least that's what I tell myself when I realise I have eaten a sh$£load of cash in depreciation on a new one. Even then it only makes any sense if you can't get the options you want in a used car due to lack of availability/rarity. And I'd still maybe not buy another new BMW in the UK. You can do a lot with the £8k extra it costs over a used 6 month old car.

2. You can always get discounts on new cars.

3. I wouldn't buy a 4-cylinder for a higher cost than a more powerful 6-cylinder, but that's just me.

How about a 335i. Still rare. More grunt. Less cash. You can buy a lot of fuel with the price difference.

so the general consensus seems to be not to bother, and get a normo 3er :/

i must confess, not really the answer i was after haha... but it must be the reason you don't really see many of them about i guess, the numbers just don't 'stack up'

back to the drawing board perhaps

I saw an 11 plate Alpina D3 on the road the other day. First LCI Alpina I have seen.
I used to like them a lot but I don't think the current Alpina offereings have aged all that well.

Alpina fanboys will flame me for this but it all looked a bit Halfords to me - and that's coming from someone with BMW Performance bits stuck all over his car.
