Just did oil change few questions

So I just did my first oil change ever. I have a 2007 335i. It went just fine, I followed the DIY on here and no problems. Just have a few questions.

1. When I took the oil filter out, there was a lot of oil left in the space it came out of, I just left it there and put the new filter in. I have a pic here to show what I mean.

2. When putting the new oil filter in, it definitely required some force to get it in. Is this normal? I used a special took for removing and putting the filter/filte rcap in and out.

3. I put 7 quarts of oil in, but it is still slightly below max. I would say it is 3/4 to the max line, but not quite there, is this normal/okay?

4. Thew oil drain bolt I just tightened it til it was pretty tight, not overly tight, but tight. I would say once the bolt stopped turning, I applied some force and turned it a quarter more turn or so, if I did over tighten it only hrm would be it being tough to get off the next time right?

Evereything went fine, I replaced both gaskets on the filter, drained all the old oil out, all seems good. Some feedback to my questions would be appreciated!

One more thing I want to add, I lubricated the gaskets but did not lubricate the filter, I just put the filter in dry.

Also i know this is a super ocd question but when i was done with putting 6.5 quarts in at forst i just threw the funnell on the grass. I then checked and added more oil. I noticed there were a few very very snall pieces of grass at the top. If something like that gor into the oil what would happen?

The filter was dry and i felt it was really snug while putting it in. I took it out again after driving around and it soaked up some oil and it slid in nice and easily. I just bought some casterol 5 30 and an going to put a quarter of that in or so to top it off

#1, i find that super annoying and i always use a hand pump vaccum to vaccum it out. To me, this is a design flaw/fail from bmw >___<"

everything else seems alright, good job!! xD

Thanks. Yeah it was pretty easy. The only mistake I did make was when I first put the oil catch under the car to drain it out, I plced it off to the side because at first the oil shoots out, so I just left it there but did not take into consideration that s it drains it will just start coming out straight down instead of shooting back, so I went in and came back to a very big mess on my driveway. Cleaned it up but it stained a little. Something had to have gone wrong for my first ever oil change lol.

I just added 1/3 of casterol oil to try to get it to the max line, but it is still reading this. This is 7 and 1/3 quarts of oil, I am definitely not adding anymore because the sensor must be messed up or something...

Take it to an independent BMW repair shop next time. You do not have the proper skills to change the oil.

You learn by doing, he'll be fine. Read, read, then read some more OP. Buy a Bentley manual if you plan to DIY, it helps a lot and if you're concerned about over tightening use a good torque wrench. All torque specs are covered in the manual. In this case I think the oil drain plug and oil filter cap are both 25 Nm.

I've read before that the oil meter is not to scale and that you risk overfilling if you base the amount you are adding on that meter. When it says to add 1 qt I just add 1 qt so I'm not guesstimating.

Yeah I figured the gauge was slightly off. I added probably less than 1/3 of a court though and now it says full. So I put a total of just over 7 quarts in.

That was just an a**hole statement that guy made. I was just double checking on a few things. I am a little OCD when it comes to my car, that's all. I plan on doing any jobs that come up that are DIY. Gonna bleed the brkes next.

I am really enjoying learning and working on my car. I feel very proactive doing so and it's a new hobby for me. Not gonna do anything that I am not comfortable with, I'll leave the bigger jobs for VAC in Philly. But I think the majority of the things that will come up I can do myself.
